Introduction to Power BI in 10 Minutes

Overview

  • Power BI is a tool to uncover stories and make decisions based on data.
  • We'll cover:
    • Importing data
    • Building a data model
    • Adding visuals and filtering
    • Sharing reports and dashboards

Getting Power BI

  • Open Microsoft Store and search "Power BI."
  • Three options available:
    • Power BI: View and interact with reports.
    • Power BI Desktop: Full functionality to model data and build reports (used in this guide).
    • Report Builder: Similar to desktop but less feature-rich.

Initial Setup

  • After launching Power BI Desktop:
    • Splash screen offers data access and learning resources.
    • Options to disable splash screen.
  • Main report view:
    • Import data via "Get Data" on "Home" tab.
    • Various data sources available.

Importing and Transforming Data

  • Example using Excel workbook with tables: "Customers" and "Orders."
  • Options upon import:
    • Load Data: Import as is.
    • Transform Data: Modify data before importing (useful if original data is uneditable).
  • Power Query Editor allows data modification:
    • Replace inconsistent values (e.g., "US" to "United States").
    • Remove unnecessary columns (e.g., "Rush Shipments").
    • Changes don't affect original data, only imported copy.

Building a Data Model

  • Use "Model view" to understand relationships between tables.
  • Automatic detection of relationships (e.g., Customer ID linking "Customers" and "Orders")
  • Manual relationship establishment by dragging fields between tables.

Creating Reports

  • Reports are collections of visualizations.
  • Choose visualizations like line charts, bar charts, tables, etc.
    • Line Chart: Cookies shipped over time.
    • Card: Total revenue display.
    • Table: List of all customers.
  • Interactive elements allow filtering (e.g., selecting a customer filters data across visuals).

Finalizing and Sharing Reports

  • Add additional pages for varied data views.
  • Share with team for feedback:
    • Use "Publish" option; save and choose a workspace.
    • View report on Power BI web service.
    • Share via file menu options:
      • Embed in SharePoint, websites, generate QR codes.
      • Export as PowerPoint, PDF.
      • Share via email, link, or Microsoft Teams.

Conclusion

  • Practice using Power BI to improve analytics skills.
