African History and Contributions

Sep 19, 2025

Overview

This lecture discusses the omission of African history from mainstream textbooks, the contributions of ancient Africans to civilization and religion, and critiques the misrepresentation of African heritage and beliefs.

Exclusion of African History

  • African history is not included in most textbooks because they are written by non-Africans.
  • Mainstream narratives often contain propaganda that overlooks African achievements.

African Contributions to Civilization

  • Ancient Egyptians recognized the Earth was round and orbited the sun 6,000 years ago.
  • Egyptian astronomers calculated the Earth's circumference with remarkable accuracy, being off by only about one yard.
  • The black race significantly contributed to and civilized others, including Europeans, on multiple occasions.

Religious Misrepresentation and Critique

  • Mainstream Christian imagery often depicts Heaven as a space for white people, associating blackness with hell.
  • Africans were forced into slavery, converted to European Christianity, and lost their own superior spiritual traditions.
  • Christianity describes a personal God and salvation through Christ, whereas African religions focused on self-improvement and reincarnation.

African Traditional Religion vs. Christianity

  • African religions were often atheistic or natural, not centered on a personal creator God.
  • Egyptians believed in reincarnation: a better next life was earned by good deeds, not granted by prayer.
  • Prayer to gods or angels for salvation was discouraged; self-responsibility was emphasized.

African Religion and the Universe

  • African traditional religion included many gods representing natural forces, merged into one great god symbolizing the universe.
  • The universe was seen as eternal and uncreated, with nature itself as the supreme being.
  • The concept of Trinity: physical universe (God), mental universe (Christ), and their interaction producing life.

Misunderstanding of African Identity

  • Even educated professionals often deny Egypt is part of Africa, illustrating widespread miseducation.
  • Egyptian history and collections are frequently not recognized as African heritage.

Key Terms & Definitions

  • Reincarnation โ€” Belief that souls are reborn into new lives based on previous actions.
