Basic Military Training (BMT) FAQs

General Information

  • Length of BMT: 7.5 weeks long (as of 4 May 22).

    • Graduation Parade is typically on the 7th Thursday after arrival.
    • Trainees can mail home a welcome letter with graduation details.
  • Change in Length: No upcoming changes planned (as of 4 May 22).

    • Any changes will be widely announced before implementation.
  • Phone Usage:

    • Limited opportunities to use phones.
    • Calls timing varies by flight; additional privileges based on performance.
    • Only the telephone feature is allowed, no video calls.

Training Details

  • Weeks of Training (WOTs):

    • Early weeks focus on in-processing and medical appointments.
    • Later weeks focus on squadron training and BEAST in week 6.
    • Week 7 is for graduation preparation.
  • PACER FORGE:

    • A two-day deployment exercise in week 6.
    • Focuses on flexibility, teamwork, decision-making.
  • Gas Chamber Training:

    • Part of CBRN Defense Course in week 4.
    • Trainees experience tear gas briefly to increase confidence.

Medical and Privacy

  • Medical Hold:

    • Placed for medical reasons, handled by medical authorities.
    • Time varies, trainees keep pay and benefits.
  • Discharge Process:

    • No set timeline; thorough process with opportunities for appeal.

Physical Training (PT) Requirements

  • PT Test: Consists of push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run.
    • Standards vary by age and gender.

Communication and Mail

  • Mail Delivery:

    • Handled Monday-Friday.
    • Incorrectly addressed mail may not reach the trainee.
  • Mail Restrictions:

    • Only letters allowed; packages opened in MTI presence.
  • Pay and Allowances:

    • First paycheck takes 30-45 days; $400 advance given for essentials.

Graduation and Visitors

  • Guest Access:

    • Trainees can request 6 guests for base access.
    • DoD ID holders can escort additional guests.
  • Graduation Week Schedule:

    • Wednesday: Airman's Run and Coin Ceremony.
    • Thursday: Graduation Parade.

Additional Information

  • Dress Code: Graduation has no strict dress code, but attire should be appropriate.
  • Off-Base Privileges: Granted on graduation week allowing limited time off base.
