Overview of Conduct Disorder

• Definition: A spectrum of disorders characterized by repetitive and aggressive behavior that violates the rights of others.
• Precursor: Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
  • Symptoms of ODD:
    • Persistent acting out
    • Issues at school and home
    • Often angry and argumentative with adults
    • Refuse to follow rules
    • Deliberately annoy people and blame others for their mistakes

Symptoms of Conduct Disorder

• Characteristics:
  • Aggressive behavior (fighting, bullying, cruelty to people and animals)
  • Lying and stealing
  • Destroying property
  • Running away from home

Risk Factors

• Psychiatric comorbidities: ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder
• Learning disabilities
• Dysfunctional family environment

Treatment

• Anger management training
• Talk therapy
• Medications for psychiatric comorbidities
• Parental guidance:
  • Setting clear and reasonable boundaries
  • Consistent discipline
  • Rewarding positive behaviors
