Overview
Coach Ryan, GM and head coach of the Texas Ranchers, led a clinic providing tactical and technical pickleball advice primarily focused on doubles strategies, shot selection, and player roles, with practical drills and key adjustments for both men’s and women’s play.
General Strategic Principles
- Don’t overfocus on opponents’ gender or perceived weaknesses; rely on shot selection based on court position.
- Use consistent shots in similar court situations, regardless of who is across the net.
- Prioritize controlling shots you can reliably execute over exploitative targeting unless a clear weakness appears.
- Communicate clearly with your partner, especially after hitting effective shots, to maximize team advantage.
Shot Selection and Execution
- Return straight (down the line) after unwinding to buy more time for court recovery.
- For forehand volleys, focus on forward redirection instead of slapping; use more arm than wrist.
- Generate topspin with a low-to-high paddle motion, especially when under the net or at net height; hit through the ball when it’s high.
- Use roll drops and drives to target opponents off the net for larger margin for error.
- Drill and disguise the lob, particularly out of a dink rally, avoiding telegraphing it by body language.
Partner Coordination and Movement
- Signal your partner to advance when you hit a strong drop or drip; don’t leave it to guesswork.
- After a bad reset, alert your partner to play defensively (“back” or “watch”).
- Both players should advance after an effective soft shot if the ball will be contacted below net height by the opponent.
Position-Specific Guidance
- “Mix men” should camp in the middle during dinking until the opposing woman proves she can successfully attack behind.
- Women should develop the ability to dink the line, keeping opposing men honest and preventing them from dominating the middle.
- Both men and women should practice crosscourt and line shots to cover all strategic angles.
Technical Drills and Homework
- Practice punching volleys forward, not downward, especially on high, attackable balls.
- Progress to rolling low balls using body weight and paddle angle to generate topspin.
- Women should drill two-handed backhand bailouts for defensive returns at the body, especially for chaotic points.
- Drill the lob from a dink, focusing on deception and correct timing.
Action Items
- TBD – All players: Communicate after successful drops and drips to coordinate movement.
- TBD – All players: Practice forehand and backhand volley form—focus on linear punches and topspin generation where appropriate.
- TBD – All players: Drill lobs out of dink rallies while disguising intent.
- TBD – Women: Train two-handed backhand bailouts for defensive situations at the body.
- TBD – Men: Focus on forward punch volleys and rolling low balls using correct footwork.
