Overview

This lecture introduces Microsoft Excel for beginners, covering the user interface, basic terms, navigating worksheets, and simple data entry techniques.

Excel Interface Overview

  • The main screen in Excel displays templates to start new worksheets (blank, calendars, budgets, etc.).
  • Excel uses "tabs" at the top (e.g., Home, Insert, Formulas) to organize features.
  • Each tab contains a "ribbon," which is a set of menus and buttons grouped by function (like Clipboard, Font, Styles).

Basic Excel Structure

  • Columns are labeled alphabetically (A, B, C, ..., Z, AA, AB, etc.) and run vertically.
  • Rows are labeled numerically (1, 2, 3, ...) and run horizontally.
  • The intersection of a column and row is called a "cell" (e.g., A1, C2).
  • A "range" refers to a selection of multiple cells (e.g., A1:C3).

Working with Worksheets (Sheets)

  • A worksheet in Excel is called a "sheet" or "spreadsheet."
  • Add new sheets by clicking the plus (β€œ+”) button at the bottom.
  • Sheets can be renamed by right-clicking and selecting "Rename."

Entering and Editing Data

  • Click a cell once to select (activate) it.
  • Double-click a cell to edit its contents with a blinking cursor.
  • If text is too long for a column, column width can be adjusted by dragging the column boundary.
  • Rows and columns can also be resized by dragging their edges or double-clicking for auto-fit.

Zoom and Display Options

  • The zoom feature (bottom right) adjusts worksheet view size for easier reading.
