Overview

This lecture covers major events and turning points in World War II in Europe and the Pacific from its outbreak in 1939 to its end in 1945.

Outbreak of World War II

  • World War II began in September 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland using blitzkrieg ("lightning war") tactics.
  • Britain and France declared war on Germany, starting the conflict, but took little military action at first ("Phony War").

Early Axis Advances

  • In 1940, Germany quickly defeated Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.
  • The British Army retreated and was evacuated from Dunkirk.

Battle of Britain and Operation Barbarossa

  • Germany attacked Britain in the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, but the Luftwaffe failed to defeat the RAF (Royal Air Force).

Allied Victories and War’s End

  • On June 6, 1944 (D-Day), the Allies launched Operation Overlord, invading Normandy, France.
  • The Red Army (Soviet Union) advanced from the east, reaching Berlin first.
  • Germany surrendered in May 1945 after Hitler's suicide.
  • On August 6, 1945, the USA dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima; Japan surrendered on V-J Day, August 15, 1945.
  • World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945 and was the most widespread military conflict in history.
