The Ghost Blimp Incident (1942)

Introduction

  • Today's story is inspired by the YouTube channel Wartime Stories hosted by Luke lman, a Recon Marine.
  • The channel features strange, dark, and mysterious tales from the battlefield and beyond.
  • Not only serves as a plug for the channel but also ties into the week's story, which is a paranormal incident from WWII.

Incident Overview

  • Date: August 16, 1942
  • Location: Near the beach just south of San Francisco, California.
  • Main Witness: Ida Ruby, a woman riding her horse near the coastline.

Initial Sighting

  • Ida, riding her horse with binoculars, sees a blimp over the water.
  • The blimp looked like a military blimp, not a Goodyear blimp (common during WWII).
  • Blimps were deployed to look for Japanese submarines off the coast.

The Mission

  • Pilots: Lieutenant Ernest Cody (27) and Officer Charles Adams (34).
  • Task: Routine mission to patrol for Japanese submarines.
  • Original plan: Pilot the blimp over the Golden Gate Bridge, to the Falon Islands, Point Rees, and back.
  • Initially, the blimp was too heavy due to moisture. The mechanic stayed behind for the blimp to take off.

Timeline of Events

7:38 AM

  • First radio transmission: Pilots report everything is routine.
  • Located just east of the Falon Islands.

7:50 AM

  • Second radio transmission: Pilots report an oil slick, likely indicating a submarine.
  • The blimp descends to investigate.

Fishing Boat Encounter

  • Boat: Daisy Gray
  • The captain saw the blimp descend rapidly and drop flares into the water.
  • Blimp rockets back into the clouds and disappears.

Disappearance and Reappearance

  • Air control tries to contact the blimp multiple times but gets no response.
  • Sea planes dispatched to find the blimp; initially unsuccessful.
  • Eventually, blimp is spotted unusually high and off course, then suddenly descends rapidly and disappears again.

Final Witness - Ida Ruby

  • Ida sees the blimp again, noticing its deflated state and strange behavior, drifting uncontrollably towards her.
  • Through her binoculars, she saw three men inside the gondola. There should only be two pilots.
  • The blimp crashes in Daly City after scraping rooftops and hitting power lines.

Aftermath & Investigation

  • Blimp found crumpled in Daly City, with no explosion or fire.
  • No one found inside the gondola. Everything inside appeared to be in working order.
  • Navy's investigation provided no conclusive explanation:
    • Pilots had life preservers and were unlikely to have fallen out.
    • No evidence of stowaway room or intrusion.
    • Parachutes and life rafts still present inside.

Theories and Speculations

  • Stowaways: Excess weight could have been a hidden stowaway.
  • Japanese Capture: Pilots possibly captured by Japanese.
  • Alien Abduction: Extreme theory involving extraterrestrial involvement.

Conclusion

  • Unresolved mystery dubbed the Ghost Blimp.
  • Continues to baffle researchers and enthusiasts to this day.
