Brahmacharya: The Fourth Yama

  • Definition: Brahmacharya is often translated as celibacy but more accurately means "right use of energy."
  • Traditional View: Encouraged conserving sexual energy for spiritual progress.
  • Modern Interpretation: Focuses on directing energy away from external desires toward inner peace.
  • Behavior: Leads toward divine or a higher power (Brahman).

Importance of Energy Direction

  • Mind Energy: Often spent worrying or trying to impress others.
  • Physical Energy: Sometimes spent excessively on fitness.
  • Awareness: Listen to body needs, especially when unwell.
  • Benefits of Happiness: Boosts immune system, promotes relaxation.

Yoga Practice as Energy Management

  • Ujjayi Pranayama: Known as "breath of victory," involves a slight throat constriction.
    • Benefits: Tranquilizes, enhances focus, boosts immunity, cleanses emotional body.
    • Technique: Slow, rhythmic breathing with soft whisper sound.

Asana Practice

  • Focus: Forward folds and twists.
  • Awareness: Pelvis alignment during twists and forward folds.
  • Standing Forward Folds: Uttanasana (intense stretch), Ardha Uttanasana (half lift).
  • Wide-Legged Forward Fold: Prasarita Padottanasana, focuses on spine lengthening.
  • Seated Forward Folds: Paschimottanasana (seated forward bend), Upavishta Konasana (wide angle seated forward bend).
  • Additional Poses: Includes pyramid pose, revolved triangle, fierce pose (Utkatasana).

Practice Mindset
