Overview
This lecture discusses a cross-sectional study on persisting post-Covid-19 symptoms in New Zealand children, their prevalence, risk factors, and impact on health and daily life after widespread community transmission in 2022.
Long Covid in Children: Background
- Long Covid (post-Covid-19 condition) is the persistence or appearance of new symptoms after acute Covid-19, without another explanation.
- Common symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive dysfunction, sleep disturbances, and muscle or joint pain.
- Prevalence estimates for Long Covid in children range from 14% to 25% in different studies.
Study Design and Methods
- Cross-sectional survey of 4,264 children and young adults (aged 3–20) from NZ Health Survey participants.
- Data collected Nov 2022–Apr 2023, comparing health before and after widespread SARS-CoV-2 transmission.
- Telephone survey captured Covid-19 status and new or persistent symptoms post-infection.
Key Findings: Post-Covid-19 Symptoms
- 70.6% reported having tested positive for Covid-19 at least once.
- Over 20% reported new ongoing symptoms after infection.
- Most common symptoms: coughs/colds/stomach bugs (24.5%), headaches (21.7%), fatigue (20.6%), stomach aches (14.6%), and anxiety (13.1%).
- 13.1% of children had new anxiety symptoms post-Covid.
- 9.1% reported concentration difficulties and 9.2% of females 15+ reported menstrual changes.
Risk Factors and Impact
- 24.2% had a prior long-term health condition (asthma, eczema, allergies, ADHD, autism).
- Children with prior long-term health conditions were more likely to develop new symptoms post-Covid.
- Self-rated good/very good health dropped from 82.6% pre-pandemic to 66.9% after Omicron waves.
- Those with Covid-19 were significantly more likely to report poorer health and miss school/activities.
Prevention and Recommendations
- Preventing infection is key to avoiding post-Covid symptoms.
- Measures: ventilation, air filtration, mask use, hybrid learning, and staying home when sick.
- Vaccination offers protection against Long Covid.
Key Terms & Definitions
- Long Covid (Post-Covid-19 Condition) — symptoms lasting or appearing after acute Covid-19 without another explanation.
- Cross-sectional study — research that analyzes data from a population at one point in time.
- Self-rated health — participant assessment of their own health on a graded scale.
Action Items / Next Steps
- Review prevention strategies for Covid-19 in school settings.
- Study the impact of long-term health conditions on post-Covid outcomes.
- Follow up with longitudinal data if available for ongoing symptom tracking.
