How to Play Poker for Beginners

Basics of Texas Hold'em

  6. Flush: Five cards of the same suit, any order.
  7. Full House: Three-of-a-kind plus a pair.
  8. Four-of-a-Kind: Also known as 'quads'.
  9. Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit.
  10. Royal Flush: Ace-high straight flush (Ten to Ace).
    • Odds: Approximately 30,000 to 1.

Playing a Hand of Poker

Important Positions

  • Button/Dealer Button: Indicates dealer position.
  • Small Blind and Big Blind: Players to the left of the dealer, required to make forced bets.

Betting Rounds

  1. Initial Deal and First Betting Round
    • Cards are dealt clockwise starting from the player left of the button.
    • Players receive two 'hole cards'.
    • First action is with the player to the left of the big blind.
    • Actions: Fold, Call (match big blind), Raise (minimum is double the big blind).
  2. The Flop
    • Three community cards are dealt face-up.
    • Second betting round begins.

Actions in Betting

  • Check: Pass the action without betting.
  • Bet: Place chips into the pot.
  • Call: Match an existing bet.
  • Raise: Increase the bet.
  • Fold: Withdraw from the hand.

Further Rounds

  1. The Turn
    • Fourth community card is dealt.
    • Followed by another betting round.
  2. The River
    • Fifth and final community card is dealt.
    • Final round of betting.

Showdown

  • Remaining players reveal their hands.
  • Best hand wins the pot.

Rotation

  • Dealer button and blinds rotate clockwise each hand.
