Philosophy Overview

Socrates

  • Founder of Western philosophy.
  • No written texts; known through Plato's dialogues.
  • Key concepts:
    • Socratic Method: Dialogue with short questions and answers, leading to impasse.
    • Socratic Irony: Pretending ignorance to reveal flaws in arguments.
  • Theory of virtue: All virtues are unified as forms of knowledge.
    • Lack of knowledge leads to immorality.
    • Famous dictum: "No one errs willingly."
    • Notable quote: "I know that I know nothing."

Plato

  • Known for Theory of Forms:
    • Material world is an image or copy of the real world.
    • Allegory of the Cave:
      • People see shadows as reality but do not understand the true forms behind them.
  • Distinction between forms and particular things.
    • Forms exist separately from the things that imitate them.

Aristotle

  • Contrast with Plato on forms:
    • Forms are instantiated in particular things, not separate from them (immanent realism).
  • Disagreed on the existence of unattached forms.
  • World made of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether.

Epicurus

  • Philosophy aims for happiness and tranquility, removing pain and fear.
  • Focus on the fear of death as a primary obstacle to happiness.
    • "When we exist, death does not exist; When death exists, we do not exist."
  • Universe is composed of matter (atoms) and void.
    • Atoms have unchanging qualities (shape, size, weight).
    • Infinite supply of atoms leads to infinite worlds.
  • Believed in empiricism: senses rely on atomic interactions.

Pythagoras

  • Mathematician who explained the universe through numbers and relationships.
  • Advocated for the immortality of the soul and reincarnation.
  • Famous for the Pythagorean theorem.

Diogenes

  • Founder of Cynicism:
    • Rejects conventional desires (money, power, fame) for virtue.
    • Happiness found by living simply and in accordance with nature.
  • Noted for shamelessness and minimalism; lived with only a cloak, staff, and knapsack.
  • Introduced the idea of cosmopolitanism; response to origin: "I am a citizen of the world."
