This lecture introduces the main Spanish interrogative pronouns (WH questions), explains their meanings, and shows how to use singular and plural forms.
Main Interrogative Pronouns in Spanish
- ¿Qué? means "what." Example: ¿Qué te gusta? (What do you like?)
- ¿Cómo? means "how." Example: ¿Cómo te gustan los huevos? (How do you like your eggs?)
- ¿Cuándo? means "when." Example: ¿Cuándo vuelves de viaje? (When do you come back from your trip?)
- ¿Dónde? means "where." Example: ¿Dónde vives? (Where do you live?)
- ¿Por qué? means "why." Example: ¿Por qué estudias español? (Why do you study Spanish?)
- ¿Cuál? (singular) and ¿Cuáles? (plural) mean "which?" Use cuál for one thing/person; cuáles for two or more.
- ¿Quién? (singular) and ¿Quiénes? (plural) mean "who?" Use quién for one person; quiénes for two or more.
- ¿Cuánto?/¿Cuánta?/¿Cuántos?/¿Cuántas? mean "how much?" or "how many?" Choice depends on gender and singular/plural.
Using Cuánto and Variants
- Use ¿cuánto? with masculine uncountable nouns: ¿Cuánto dinero hay? (How much money is there?)
- Use ¿cuánta? with feminine uncountable nouns: ¿Cuánta comida quieres? (How much food do you want?)
- Use ¿cuántos? with masculine countable nouns: ¿Cuántos amigos tienes? (How many friends do you have?)
- Use ¿cuántas? with feminine countable nouns: ¿Cuántas margaritas tomaste? (How many margaritas did you have?)
