Continuation from Last Week

  • Recap of last lecture:
    • Types of mental health disorders.
    • Diagnosing disorders professionally.
    • Symptoms should not be due to substances or other medical conditions.
    • Symptoms must meet required time periods and disrupt social, personal, and career lives significantly.

Importance of Professional Diagnosis

  • Ensure diagnosis is from a professional.
  • Symptoms must be significant and not attributable to substances or medical conditions.
  • Diagnosis should consider the entire impact on one’s life.
  • Workplace programs may refer employees to psychologists, but this does not mean a severe diagnosis.

Well-being at Work

  • Definition of health by WHO: Complete physical, mental, and social well-being.
  • Inspired by Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
    • Includes growth, self-actualization, striving for health, quest for identity, autonomy, and yearning for excellence.
  • Important for companies to focus on well-being at work in four aspects:
    • Safety: Not just physical safety but also psychological safety.
    • Healthy: Importance of work-life balance and overall employee health.
    • Satisfaction and Engagement: Ensuring employees are satisfied and engaged at work.

Psychological Contract

  • Definition: Unwritten expectations between workers and employers.
    • Examples: Expectations of respect, attainable goals, and fair treatment.
  • Importance of psychological contracts in maintaining healthy work relationships and commitment.
  • Companies should recognize that employee commitment is not achieved through wages alone.

Emotional Tax

  • Definition: Negative attitude towards a company due to harassment or discrimination.
  • Impact on productivity and overall employee well-being.
  • Emotional tax can carry over to new jobs and environments.

Importance of Workplace Well-being

  • Positive impact on company productivity when well-being is prioritized.
  • Improved retention rates and commitment to the company.
  • Examples of workplace well-being efforts like Zen rooms, snack corners, and providing supportive environments.

Valuing Diversity and Inclusion

  • Importance of diversity and inclusion in companies.
  • Support for the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month.
  • Terms and concepts within the LGBTQ+ community:
    • Ally: A supporter of the LGBTQ+ community who is not part of it.
    • Demisexual: Someone who cannot feel sexual attraction without a strong emotional connection.
    • Dead Name: Birth name of someone who has transitioned.
    • Gender Pronouns: The importance and controversies around using they/them, Ze/Zir, etc.

Talking to LGBTQ+ Individuals

  • Avoiding insensitive questions and comments.
  • Respecting privacy and understanding the importance of thoughtful interactions.
  • Valuing sexual orientation and diversity in the workplace.
  • Recognizing the negative effects of excluding LGBTQ+ individuals from the workplace.

Managing Workplace Diversity

  • Implement fair policies and provide training to managers.
  • Create a supportive and inclusive working environment.
  • Encourage involvement and revisit grievance procedures.
  • Zero-tolerance policies for bullying and harassment.
  • Benefits of diversity and inclusion: wider talent pool, higher retention, and better work environment.

Organizational Justice Theory

  • Distributive Justice: Fair distribution of rewards and benefits.
  • Procedural Justice: Fair and transparent decision-making processes.
  • Interactional Justice: Fair and respectful interactions within the company.
  • Retributive Justice: Fair punishment processes within the organization.

Group Presentation Assignment

  • Requirements: 4-5 students per group to explore diversity and inclusion trends in global companies.
  • Presentation to be submitted by September 5th and presented on September 7th.
  • Allocation of marks: Design (20%), Oral presentation (20%), Content (40%), and Referencing (20%).
  • Emphasis on critical evaluation and analysis of inclusion and diversity impacts on business growth.

Case Study Assignment

  • Individual assignment due by October 14th.
  • Questions to be based on a detailed provided case study, focusing on learning and critical evaluation.
