Understanding Purpose

  • To understand the purpose of any invention, speak to the inventor or read the owner's manual.
  • Similarly, know your life’s purpose by:
    • Talking to your creator (God)
    • Reading the "owner’s manual" (Bible)
  • Ephesians 1 says that it is in Christ we find our identity and purpose.

Five Purposes of Life

1. Created to Love God

  • God created you to love you; God is love.
  • Worship is knowing God and loving Him back.
  • Hosea 6:6: God desires love over sacrifices.
  • Living in worry indicates detachment from God (Matthew 6:32).

2. Formed for God’s Family

  • Created to be part of God's family.
  • Spiritual family (church) outlasts physical family.
  • 1 Timothy 3: Church is the family of the Living God.
  • Love others within God’s family.

3. Become Like Christ

  • Spiritual growth is crucial; model life after Jesus.
  • Develop character in this life; Jesus is the model.
  • God uses trials and temptations to build our character.
  • Galatians 5:22-23: exhibit the fruits of the spirit.
  • Trials help us grow; patience is developed through challenges.

4. Shaped to Serve God

  • Serve using spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences.
  • Psalm 139:13: God shaped us uniquely for service.
  • Ministry means serving others using your unique shape.
  • Serve others as service to God (1 Peter 4:10).

5. Made for a Mission

  • Mission: making a unique contribution.
  • Acts 20:24: life’s mission is to share God’s grace.
  • Evaluate if you're following God’s plan for life.

Living a Better Life

  • The "better life" surpasses the "good life."
  • 2 Corinthians 5: a far better life is available through Jesus.
  • Open your eyes to God’s goodness and love.
  • Matthew 11: Invitation to a relationship with God.
  • Acts 10:35: Open to all, regardless of background or doubts.
