First Aid for Unconscious Dogs

Approach with Extreme Caution

  • Injured dogs may bite more frequently.
  • Ideal to approach from behind.
  • Touch with foot first; if no response, touch with the back of your hand.
  • Always observe for any response.

Check Airway

  • Only assist dogs that are yours or you have permission to help.
  • Open mouth carefully and pull tongue forward.
  • Look for any obstructions in the airway.
  • Remove obstructions carefully if found.
  • Never do this on a conscious dog without extreme caution.

Check Breathing and Pulse

  • **Breathing: ** If unconscious and breathing, place in recovery position.
    • Extend airway as demonstrated in previous instruction.
  • **Not Breathing: ** Check for a pulse.
    • Check pulse using femoral artery on back leg.
    • If there is a pulse:
      • Ease the tongue back, squeeze jaw together.
      • Breathe into nose, watching for chest rise (4-5 breaths).
    • If no pulse:
      • Same as above then begin chest compressions.

Performing Compressions

  • **Location: ** Side of the chest.
    • Heel of the hand on top.
    • Push down hard (30 compressions).
    • Follow with 2 breaths (4-5 breaths initially, then 2 breaths after compressions).
  • Possibility of rib damage due to force.
  • **Chest Types: **
    • **Greyhound Type (Keel Chest): ** Slightly forward.
    • **Boxer Type (Barrel Chest): ** Recommend attempting compressions on the back (similar to human CPR). Alternative, conventional method may be easier.
