E-Collar Training for Dog Commands
Apr 21, 2025
E-Collar Off Command Training
Purpose of the E-Collar
Used to correct undesirable behaviors in dogs:
Jumping
Barking
Digging
Litter box diving
General Methodology
Begin with setups for training the 'off' command.
Unlike other commands, 'off' doesn't have a teaching phase where the command is introduced before the stimulus.
Say "off" simultaneously as the stimulus is applied.
Training Process
Final Command
: This is the last command taught with the e-collar to ensure dog fully understands the stimulus.
Stimulus Level
: Use a higher level than usual, rather than the working level.
Example Scenario
Behavior
: Dog jumps up.
Action
: Say "off" while tapping the e-collar button, e.g., at level 20.
No Reward
: Do not reward the dog immediately.
Redirect Behavior
: Guide the dog to a positive behavior (sit, down, or place).
Adjusting Stimulus Levels
Increments
: Increase the stimulus by 5 or 10 with every reminder.
Booster Button
: Use the red booster button on the e-collar as needed.
Example of Increasing Levels
If the dog stops jumping at a level 50, next setup:
Start at level 50.
Increase by 10 with each reminder.
Consistency
Without consistent level adjustments, the dog may require daily reminders to stop the behavior.
