Lecture on Male Reproductive System and Related Anatomy

Opening Remarks

  • Importance of filling out evaluations for feedback.
  • Reminder for students to submit evaluations at the end of class.

Male Reproductive System

Penis Anatomy

  • Cross-section:
    • Three cavernous bodies:
      • Two Corpora Cavernosa.
      • One Corpora Cavernosa Urethra with urethra internally.
    • Parasympathetic stimulation leads to blood filling cavernous bodies, resulting in erection by blocking venous flow.

Gland Secretions

  • Seminal Vesicles:
    • Secrete fructose to nourish sperm.
    • Contribute 60% of semen volume.
  • Prostate Gland:
    • Secretion activates sperm.
    • Contributes 15-30% of semen volume.
  • Bulbo Urethral Glands:
    • Peanut-sized; neutralize acid in urethra.

Ejaculation

  • Volume: 2.5 to 6 cc per ejaculation.
  • Sperm Count: 200 million per ejaculation.
  • Sterility: Defined as less than 20 million sperm per ejaculation.

Review Session Notes

Kidney and Nephron

  • Kidneys located between T12 to L3.
  • Nephron structure includes distal convoluted tubule.
  • Glomerular Filtration:
    • 1200 cc of blood produces 125 cc glomerular filtrate per minute.
    • 124 cc reabsorbed; 1 cc urine formed.
  • Hormones:
    • Anti-diuretic hormone affects collecting ducts.
    • Juxtaglomerular apparatus secretes renin.

Anatomy of the Ear

  • External Ear:
    • Auditory meatus lined by stratified squamous epithelium.
  • Middle Ear:
    • Tympanic membrane composed of connective tissue, stratified squamous epithelium, and mucous membrane.
  • Inner Ear:
    • Organ of Corti is the receptor for hearing.

Various Anatomy and Physiology Points

Digestive System

  • Stomach:
    • Mucus cells protect against HCl produced by parietal cells.
    • Chief cells produce pepsinogen.
  • Small Intestine:
    • Brunner's glands in duodenum secrete alkaline mucus.

Female Reproductive System

  • Uterus:
    • Thickest at fundus, thinnest at cervix.
    • Pap smears take tissue from cervix.
  • Vagina:
    • Lined with stratified squamous epithelium.
    • Does not produce its own secretions.

Miscellaneous

  • Sperm Viability and Vasectomy:
    • Sperm live for three days.
    • Easiest vasectomy approach through scrotum.

Closing Remarks

  • Encouragement to remember lecture content by teaching others.
  • Reminder to submit evaluations in boxes by the doors.
