Series Overview

  • Current series explores what Christians mean by "God."
  • Understanding God as revealed by Jesus: one God in three persons - Father, Son, and Spirit.
  • Third part of series focuses on the Holy Spirit.

Role of the Spirit

  • Week 1: Spirit as Creator and Life-Giver, providing breath and vitality.
  • Week 2: Spirit as Jesus' gift to his people; empowering presence from Pentecost.
  • Week 3: Spirit's role in transformation, changing the mind and heart.

Galatians Chapter 5

  • Verse 22: Focus on the "fruit of the Spirit": love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
    • Singular use of "fruit" indicates these traits are interdependent.
    • Transformation is a slow process, not immediate.

Metaphor of Fruit

  • Gardens require tending; fruit grows from external forces like the sun, much like spiritual growth.
  • Spirit influences us like sun influences plant growth.
  • Personal effort (gardening) is crucial in creating an environment for growth.

Challenges in Spiritual Growth

  • **Quick Ignition vs. Slow Burn Conversion:"
    • Quick changes or slow, gradual changes.
    • Persistent issues and character flaws often remain.

Paul’s Teachings in Galatians 5

  • Verse 16: "Walk by the Spirit" means to live empowered by the Spirit.
  • Flesh vs. Spirit: Battle between old sinful nature (flesh) and new spiritual nature.
  • Works of the Flesh: Include immorality, idolatry, relational breakdowns, etc.
  • Fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, and other virtues as signs of spiritual growth.

Practical Application

  • Becoming Gardeners of the Spirit:
    • Engage in spiritual practices (gardening) to nurture growth.
    • Spiritual growth needs cooperation with the Spirit’s work.

Overcoming Obstacles

  • Identifying and battling personal issues ("woodchucks") that hinder spiritual growth.
  • Importance of self-control and active participation in the Spirit’s work.
  • Daily choices and habits can either hinder or facilitate the Spirit’s influence.

Theological Perspective

  • The Spirit as an external force initiating growth.
  • Our role is to create environments (through choices and habits) conducive to growth.
  • Verse 24: Crucifying the flesh with its passions indicates breaking away from old sinful patterns.

Conclusion

  • Challenges of living between two realms: old sinful nature vs. new life in the Spirit.
  • Need for consistency in walking with the Spirit.
  • Encouragement to actively cultivate spiritual gardens for fruit to flourish.

Reflection and Application

  • Commit to practical steps that align with the Spirit's work in daily life.
