This lecture covers the history, core beliefs, sacred texts, deities, denominations, and social structures of Hinduism, highlighting its diversity and complexity.

Origins & History

  • Hinduism is the world’s oldest active religion, originating from the merging of the Indus Valley Civilization and Indo-Aryan nomads.
  • The word "Hindu" derives from the Sanskrit "Sindhu" for the Indus River, altered by Persian and Greek influences.
  • Hinduism and the concept of India are deeply intertwined.

Core Beliefs (Seven Hindu Beliefs)

  • Belief in one universal soul, Brahman, which is formless and the source of all reality.
  • Belief in an immortal individual soul, Atman, which transmigrates after death.
  • Belief in karma, the effects of actions on the soul’s current and future lives.
  • Belief in moksha, liberation from the cycle of rebirth by realizing oneness with Brahman.
  • Belief in the Vedas, four divinely revealed sacred texts.
  • Belief in cyclical time, where time is a repeating cycle of four long ages (Yugas).
  • Belief in dharma, proper behavior that maintains universal balance, varying by age, caste, and role.

Hindu Sacred Texts

  • The four Vedas: Rig Veda (songs, truth, reality), Yajur Veda (rites/rituals), Sama Veda (musical hymns), Atharva Veda (charms, spells, medicine).
  • The Upanishads focus on philosophy and the nature of self.
  • Other key texts: Puranas (encyclopedic beliefs), Bhagavad Gita (dharma and duty), Ramayana & Mahabharata (epic stories, societal values).

Deities & The Trinity

  • Brahma the Creator (four heads, knowledge), consort Saraswati.
  • Vishnu the Preserver (avatars: Krishna, Rama), consorts Lakshmi and Bhudevi.
  • Shiva the Destroyer (third eye, dance of destruction), consort Parvati, sons Ganesha (remover of obstacles) and Murugan (war god).

Denominations & Divine Intervention

  • Four major denominations: Vaishnavas (Vishnu), Shaivas (Shiva), Smartas (multiple gods), Shaktas (goddess Devi).
  • Avatars are divine descents to restore dharma.

Caste System

  • Four castes: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (traders), Shudras (laborers).
  • Initially based on ability, later became hereditary and rigid.
  • Social mixing is now more common in modern times.

Four Life Goals & Temptations

  • Four life goals: Dharma (duty), Artha (prosperity), Kama (pleasure), Moksha (liberation).
  • Six temptations to avoid: kama (lust/materialism), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (attachment), mada (pride), matsarya (jealousy).
