Lecture Topic: Counseling Interracial, Multiracial, and Multicultural Populations

Assignment: Competency Project

  • Develop a three-generation genogram covering three diversity areas (e.g., ethnicity, culture, SES).
  • Interview at least one family member.
  • Compare family information with readings, particularly Hardy and Laslovy's articles.
  • Write a synthesis paper (1250-1700 words) detailing cultural identity development.
  • Use APA style (title page, table of contents, references).
  • Due Sunday.

Key Concepts and Discussion

  • Multiracial Identity: Individuals often feel societal pressure to choose one identity.
  • 2000 Census Change: Allowed checking more than one racial identity box.
  • Challenges: Alienation, identity confusion, societal pressure.
