Lecture on Luisa Valenzuela and Her Short Story 'The Censors'

Miska see do turn tunes welcome back when I think all of the creative common people who are allowing two-thirds of music and let you experience a little bit of the stuff that is being created in the cultures of the different countries that were exploring the series Savannah this part Phaedra Pelotas we're burnin over Kolkata and pulsar Nova música from Creative Commons on soundcloud now if we get started on the sensors today by Luisa Valenzuela you should know that she's an Argentine journalist and fiction writer born in Buenos Aires due to political turmoil she spent many years in other countries including Spain Mexico and United States and much of her writing reflects Argentina's strife-torn a political and military situation going on right now even that her swords are sometimes filled with dark humor so look for a touch of that and the grotesque if you like a little bit of horror or strangeness he stores it for you now this short story captures the spirit of many Argentines during the military dictatorship of the 1970s they called this the process of national reorganization which is a euphemism it is actually meaning something much worse from 1976 to 1983 this period was full of remarkable violence concentration camps mass graves bill just enemies of Argentine state their own people ordinary citizens lived in terror and fled the country with a click this will include what we call situational irony as a plot twist in which the outcome of a character's intent or action goes in the opposite direction so they mean for something to happen one way but it works the opposite all right so let us begin the sensation poor fly one day they caught him with his guard down before he could even realize what he had taken as a stroke of luck was really one of Faithful dirty little ticks these things happen the minute you're careless and you let your guard down your guard ask what else it does when people that's little one let happiness a feeling you can't trust get the better of him when he received from a confidential source Marianas new address in Paris and he knew that she hadn't forgotten him without thinking twice he sat down at his table and wrote her a letter the letter that keeps his mind off his job during the day and won't let him sleep at night what God he Scrolls what did he put in that sheet of paper he's into Mariana one knows there won't be a problem with the letters content that it's irreproachable harmless but what about the rest he knows if they examined their seal and read between the lines of each and every letter and check its tiniest comma and most accidental saying he knows that all the letters passed from hand to hand and go through all sorts of tests in the huge censorship offices and that in the end very few continue on their way usually it takes months even years if there aren't any snags all this time of the freedom maybe even the life of both the sender and the receiver is in jeopardy and that's why one so down in the down thinking that something might happen to Mariana because of his letters of all people Mariana who must finally feel safe there where she's always dreamed to live but he knows that the sense of secret command operates all over the world and cashes in on the discount of air weight there's nothing to stop them from going as far is that hidden Paris neighborhood kidnapping Mariana and returning to their cozy homes certain of having fulfilled their noble mission well you got a beat him to the punch do what everyone tries to do sabotage the machinery throw sand in its gears get to the bottom of the problems who is to stop it this was wrought once it sounds plan when he like many others applied for a census job not because he had a calling or needed a job no he applied simply to intercept his own letter a consuming but unoriginal idea it was hired immediately for each day more and more sensors are needed no one would bother to check on his references ulterior motives couldn't be overlooked by the censorship to division but they needn't be too strict with those who applied they knew how hard it would be for those four guys to find the Levitt letter they wanted and even if they did with a letter or two when the nuisance it would snap up so many others that's how Hahn managed to join the post offices censorship division with a certain cold in mind the building kind of festive air on the outside which contrasted with its interstate Ness little by little spawn was absorbed by his job and he felt at peace since he was doing everything he could do to get his letter from Arianna he didn't even worry when in his first month he was sent to section K four envelopes were very carefully screened for explicitly it's true that on the third day a fellow worker had his right hand blown off by a letter but the division chief claimed it was humid legend politicans part 1 and the other employees were allowed to go back to their work I'll be it feeling less secure after work one of them tried to organize a strike to demand higher wages for unhealthy work but Wan didn't join in after thinking it over he reported him to a super superiors and just got promoted you don't form a habit by doing something one she told himself as he left his boss's office when he was transferred to section J where letters are carefully check for poison dust he felt he had climbed to rung in the ladder by working hard he quickly reached section E where the work was more interesting for he could now read and analyze letters contents here he could even hope to get a hold of his letter which by judging by the time had elapsed had gone through the other sections and probably floating around in this one Judah's work became still observing that his noble mission blurred in his mind day after day he crossed a whole paragraph in reading piteously chucking many letters into the censorship basket he's for horrible days when he was shocked by the settle in conniving ways employed by people to pass on subversive messages his instincts were so sharp that he found behind a simple the weather is unsettled or prices continue to soar the wavering hand of someone's secretly seeming to will recur the government zeal brought him Swift promotion we don't know if they've made him happy very few letters reached him in Section B only a handful passed the other hurdles so he read them over and over again passed them under Michael Mike a firing glass search from micro print with an electronic microscope and induce sense of smell so that he was beat up by the time he made at home we barely managed to warm up the soup he can fruit fall into bed satisfied with having done his duty only his darling mother worried but she couldn't get him back on the right Road she said though it wasn't totally true Lola called she's at the bar with the girls they miss you they're waiting for you or else she'd leave a bottle of red wine on the table but one wouldn't overdo it any distraction could make him lose his edge and the perfect censor had to be alert he's attentive shop to nab cheap he had a truly patriotic task but self denying and uplifting his basket for censored letters became the best fed as well as the most cutting basket in the whole censorship division he was about to congratulate himself for having discovered his true nature and to mission with his letter to Mariana reached his hands naturally he censored it without regret and Justin naturally he couldn't stop them from executing in the following morning another victim of his devotion to his work that really didn't turn out like he thought it would did it you can see the ironic twist at the end of the story now the question here is is this realistic what happens when a person starts to turn on others and eventually turns on himself what do you think of censorship that's also a side topic and one worth exploit I hope you enjoyed this story and maybe it inspired you to write one your own
