Compressor Operation Overview

1. Airflow Process

  • Inlet Guide Vane: Initial entry point for air.
  • High-Speed Rotating Impeller:
    • Imparts kinetic energy via centrifugal force.
    • Increases air speed.
  • Diffuser:
    • Converts accelerated air's kinetic energy into pressure.
  • Scroll: Efficiently collects diffused air.

2. Compression Stages

  • First Compression Stage:
    • Air is compressed, increasing temperature.
    • Cooled by an intercooler before moving to the next stage.
  • Second Compression Stage:
    • Air undergoes further compression and cooling by another intercooler.
  • Third Compression Stage:
    • Final stage of compression.
    • Aftercooler cools air post-compression.

3. Discharge

  • Efficiently compressed and cooled air is discharged from the compressor outlet.

Key Concepts

  • Centrifugal Force: Used by the impeller for kinetic energy imparting.
  • Intercooler and Aftercooler: Used for cooling air to maintain efficiency and manage temperature.
