hi I am Gigi and EX Amazon bar raiser here at day one careers in this video we're going to cover the Amazon Interview how to come up with stories and because it's exactly the same thing by default we'll also be covering AWS interview how to come up with stories I think this is a two-parter but you don't need to go back to part one before watching this just make sure you do afterwards now depending on your level and role we're going to probably need between 8 and 20 stories from your career I explain in part one why that is but even at the smallest number of eight that's still a significant number of stories to have to come up with before you get started on either strategy you have to understand the leadership principles really well this is foundational to your ability to create your stories because ultimately in both strategies I tell you about in part one and two you'll need your stories to strongly demonstrate one or more of the leadership principles so check out part one on my tips for how to make sure you really understand the leadership principles once you feel you really have your head around the leadership principles you're ready to start creating stories this strategy that I'll take you through for how to come up with stories I'm going to call working backwards note no relationship is intended with the various publications of that same name so in this strategy we're going to start with the leadership principles the first thing you need to do in the working backwards strategy is to try to narrow down your focus so you only develop stories for the leadership principles that you need to so start with your recruiter and ask them if they'll tell you which are the important ones now they may or they may not but have a go anyway then if you find you need to you can do a deconstruction of your job description to try and identify them yourself there's a link in the description to a demo of how you can do this although a bit trickier you can also try reaching out to amazonians already doing your type of role and ask them what they think the leadership principles are or of course we do offer a service for this at day one careers and I will put a link to that in the description once you've narrowed down your focus you want to get into the detail of those leadership principles and break them apart into their core elements by this I mean each leadership principle actually has a number of Dimensions at day one careers we've created a learning model where we call those Dimensions facets and we've identified the facets for all of the 16 leadership principles in our courses I'm going to give you one of those courses for free at the end of the video so I'll use the one that will give you for free in my illustration here customer Obsession has four facets coaching challenging anticipating and championing in this strategy you use your understanding of those facets to reflect back on your career history over the last let's say three to five years for stories that align to one or more of the facets in this strategy you work your way backwards through the leadership principles and their facets to identify projects or episodes in your career history that demonstrate them once you've identified a story write it down in its entirety with all of the detail you can remember once you have it written down you should re-read it and challenge yourself if there's any other leadership principles that you see strongly presented in the story and then write a second version of that story with the alternative leadership principle strongly highlighted go through this process for all of the key leadership principles you identified as priorities use your memory but also go back and look at old emails and old documents for ideas if you've watched part one and part two you'll notice that these processes are in fact very similar they're simply done in a different order there's no data to suggest one or the other is any better it's simply a matter of preference I hope you found that useful please do give us a thumbs up and or comment below and don't forget to grab the free course I mentioned earlier the details for which are coming up right now now what you need to do is click the link here to claim your free day one careers customer Obsession taster course watch that and you'll nail every customer Obsession question asked of you in your Amazon interview or if you want to do that a little bit later why don't you check out more here of our incredible insights and advice on Amazon Interview preparation
