SATA and eSATA Interfaces

Overview

  • SATA (Serial ATA Attachment)
    • Common interface type for storage devices in laptops and desktops.
    • Used exclusively inside computers.

SATA Versions

  • SATA Revision 1.0: 1.5 Gbps, 1-meter cable
  • SATA Revision 2.0: 3 Gbps, 1-meter cable
  • SATA Revision 3.0: 6 Gbps, 1-meter cable
  • SATA Revision 3.2: 16 Gbps, 1-meter cable

SATA Connectors

  • Data Transfer Connector: Smaller 7-pin connector
  • Power Connector: Larger 15-pin connector
  • Molex Connector: Alternative power option for older systems
  • One-to-One Connections: Single power and data connectors per drive

Motherboard Connections

  • SATA Interfaces on Motherboard
    • Multiple SATA connectors, e.g., SATA Revision 2 and 3
    • Color-coded connectors (varies by motherboard)
    • Direct connections from motherboard to storage devices
    • Each storage device needs power and data connections

eSATA (External SATA)

  • Matches speeds of internal SATA versions
  • Maximum Cable Length: 2 meters
  • eSATA Adapter Cards: Provide external SATA links
  • Connector Differences:
    • Internal SATA: L-shaped connector
    • External eSATA: Slightly larger, different layout
  • eSATA Cables Required for eSATA connections

Combined Connectivity Options

  • Some storage drives offer multiple connectivity options:
    • FireWire
    • USB 2.0
    • eSATA
