Metronidazole (Brand Name: Flajol)

  • Main Use: Primarily used to treat C. diff infections, which is a superbug in the gut.
    • NCLEX Tip: Be cautious of ceftriaxone, which can cause C. diff.
    • Other Use: Treats STIs, specifically trichomoniasis.

Key Points

  • Avoid Alcohol: No alcohol during treatment and for 3 days after. Consumption can lead to violent vomiting and cramping.
  • Normal Side Effects:
    • Dark urine or brown/rusty discoloration.
    • Metallic taste in the mouth.
  • Deadly Side Effects:
    • Any new rash or skin peeling needs to be reported immediately. It could indicate Steven Johnson Syndrome (necrosis of skin and mucous membranes).

  • M: Metallic taste (normal side effect)
  • E: Avoid ETOH (alcohol)
  • T: Treats C. diff and trichomoniasis (STI)
  • R: Rash and skin peeling (report immediately)
  • O: O not dazzling (C. diff and STIs are not dazzling)
