Metronidazole (Brand Name: Flajol)
- Main Use: Primarily used to treat C. diff infections, which is a superbug in the gut.
- NCLEX Tip: Be cautious of ceftriaxone, which can cause C. diff.
- Other Use: Treats STIs, specifically trichomoniasis.
Key Points
- Avoid Alcohol: No alcohol during treatment and for 3 days after. Consumption can lead to violent vomiting and cramping.
- Normal Side Effects:
- Dark urine or brown/rusty discoloration.
- Metallic taste in the mouth.
- Deadly Side Effects:
- Any new rash or skin peeling needs to be reported immediately. It could indicate Steven Johnson Syndrome (necrosis of skin and mucous membranes).

- M: Metallic taste (normal side effect)
- E: Avoid ETOH (alcohol)
