Overview of Key Management Theories

strategies and theories I'm going to have you guys tell me whether or not you feel some of these are actually worth what they kind of came out to be but guess what some of them are still used today like Frederick Taylor Frederick Taylor in the 1800s talked about leadership in a different way let's define it because he was scientific approach to tasks I don't really want leadership leaders assign team members to best match their abilities train them efficient maximum efficiency at all times you ignore the human individual you're a in the machine you can be replaced what uh management style does that sound like that represents a current company today John who could burn you out and replace you in five minutes name a company oh my God you might lose your arm but so what we got a few more packages out sounds like somebody's still using that so what are the strengths of that model Logan give me a strength one word strength of that type of model profitability the prophet what's another one Daniel give me a strength we're going to go through this through three theories so don't worry kids you're all going to get picked on at least two or three times go for it Daniel effici efficiency what's another one Brooklyn give me a strength see the thing is when I bounce around it also means you don't know whether I'm picking on you so you got to pay attention it's going to be great go for it Brooklyn a strength yeah come on give me a strength give me a wicked strength sometimes these strengths are also the worst things about us I mean doesn't Jeff Bezos look like the bond villain we all wanted right he makes money right we said profit we said efficiency what else I mean I guess they don't really have to wor kind of like by the way does everyone know that all those multi-level marketing schemes that you only have about an eight time Factor before you've reached everybody that's why there's schemes right So eventually Amazon's running out of now people to be able to hire like overall like they've gone into small towns and they' basically hired and fire just about everybody doesn't seem like a good business model does it Brent what is a weakness of this model turnover huh turn turnover what's another weakness give me a weakness something that's terrible about this model negative brand you know we can lie to ourselves there's a part of us that still won't do certain things because of what a brand has done I'll never eat it Subway again sorry you want to shuttle around a child molester for half a minute you know and make him your brand image and then basically say oh sorry don't know if I ever want to buy from you again Nico what's a weakness maybe like um or working conditions if I don't care about you I'm not going to care about the conditions you're in what's an opportunity with this model Kayla what's an opportunity with this type of model Lonnie is excited she's gonna be next go for it gross Alani that's say I know but she took it from you out of thin air grabbed it from your brain how is it she's a mind reader I don't know I think that's actual theft Kayla Tom Cruz is going to descend from the walls and make you join Scientology pre crime go for it that was funnier than you gave it credit for John people so go what's a what's an opportunity here uh low cost lower cost oh what other what place brags about low costs all the time always low prices what which one what what what company calls always low prices Alex it's in their slogan and they burn people out left and right you can't even make manager by the way we lay you off after 18 months so that you can come back in the 19th month so that way you can't actually achieve the manager role because we'd have to pay you more oh by the way half of our employees are on welfare I don't know there seems to be a lot of them around they have a smiley face as a logo one more maybe they're using this model too what are the threats of this so what are the threats of this type of model being implemented you can't use any of these I know horrible gets your mind to jogging comp competition because what happens cilia when all of a sudden I come in and I'm a competitor who does not exist in this type of world you lose they may know the difference between Target in Walmart statistically anytime people have more money they will go to Target for the item why is that Cecilia cheaper is it really the no it's more expensive at Target why is it more expensive but people will go to it it's the value it's the way they treat their customers also the way they treat their employees do we think that that matters to me whether because you know I mean I can I don't wear Nikes but I could if I wee Nikes right now what would that say about me maybe I'm okay with people being chained to floors little little bad come on Gavin you know what happens sometimes we look the other way some other people that don't speak English that we can exploit go for it what's a threat what would be a threat to us unwilling to St Gavin do we think the governments might get involved do we think that governments might intervene after a while and say n nay I can just burn out and Destroy people Sheila is that what's happening with a lot of Amazon stores government's like you cannot lock them in the warehouse like they did in um I believe it was San Bernardino where the air conditioner stopped and it reached 137 degrees inside people were passing out you can't do that apparently some people needed their packages what's yours Sheila what's your threat regulations regulations wonderful so as you see these are the ones for Frederick Taylor now let's do it again this is to get your mind jogging this is mind jogger stuff relax now we go to Henry foil it was 19th century principles of administrative management obviously the book of the year right John I mean we read that cover to cover that was like war in pieace right so they talk about the five functions of leaders forecast plan coordinate command and control employees have the freedom to do things without having people have to tell them what to do Kayla do we like that you have the freedom to do things just let you do whatever you want oh that's sounds a little weird like to tell people equity and how everybody is treated sounds like a good word sounds like a good term Sicilia do we feel the equity and how people are treated a little different than Frederick Taylor right oh you're Equitable yeah so we can get rid of you communication flows from the top down chain of command we've never heard that term have we John sure no one management one Department coordinating group activities towards a single goal what does this sound like John and if you get this wrong I'm kicking you out of class what does what sound like CH of command no what does Henry foil's management style sound like you existed in it long enough right the military right everything you know oh we have Equity right yeah you can all get shot at the same time everyone can kind of do what they need to right we have one unit one one group right we're all going towards a single goal so what are the strengths of that what are the strengths of Henry foil teion huh team cohesion cohesion probably spelled that wrong it's a Friday I can admit my errors leing what's the strength of that type of model aside from giving me the scrunch face in which you're like I don't want to I want to be picked on you have an answer you have an answer anybody want to steal an answer for $500 it's all fake going with Brent then Brent what are we going to do strength give me a strength of that type of model the top down model yeah ien what else Brooklyn you're next right you're you're going to answer next you're like no I don't want to I to be picked on seriously like excited she's like to answer go for it I don't know I mean equality if it's in in spaces of equality John do you believe that even when people say it that's what they always happens do you believe that maybe some groups also exist that we don't think actually exist do we think that sometimes there's subgroups that actually make other groups not feel welcome it's like I'm leading to a conclusion I already know the answer to and we both do right yeah sometimes we fight fight the Nazis and sometimes we find Nazis in our own place don't we Siri what's a weakness of our model our Henry foil model what's a weakness I can't tell you anything everything comes from the top I can't go tell the generals that they're wrong on something can I John what happened in Vietnam hey we're on the ground here this is wrong I'm back in Virginia sorry you need to keep doing it did we feel that was an effective model that worked out by the way we can use any model we want with this the Soviets found this out in Afghanistan that was their Vietnam yeah Soviets had the same thing all you have to have is a bunch of Guerilla Warfare with people that are fighting and your top command saying listen to us and what happens people get hurt right Ethan what is the weakness of this model lack of adaptability Logan effective communication effective communication now they will say communication flows from the top down chain of command isn't that kind of a a weird sense that hierarchy actually means uh intelligence do we always find that the people at the top are smart no Kyle what's an opportunity in this type of model grow everybody's on the same Lani by the way I don't know if you're right but we'll find out the idea is not just to uh have me just tell you yes or no the idea is for you to kind of ponder these things yourself as this sits in your head at 2:50 a.m. right I know it does for me go for it elani there's more opportunities for people at the top more opportunities for the people at the top John how' that work out what do they call you if you're a a a onear general horse holder right you're not really you're not really one of them right there's more opportunities for you great you can manage our meetings Kayla what's an opportunity it's all to get you to think all the wonderful ways you think you're next no I'm going to just say a pick on you huh brand what does that mean does that work yes you just took it cuz I wrote it what's a threat to this type of model does that work Alex uh like undermining undermining how did you feel John did you feel that sometimes people undermined that when it was just top of uh the chain of going down chain of command top down that maybe somebody like a major might actually say the people at the top said something get you to do something that was maybe not correct manipulation manipulation of hierarchy oh my gosh Daniel either that or soap whichever do you want to do it she looked she looked ready I mean whichever one gets the a uh oh one do you want the c or the a I said to controlling too controlling okay and I spelled that with one L instead of two and I am genx which means that I have to be a Nazi right on spelling it's about it okay now we get to Max vber Max vber I know you all have his baseball card bureaucratic management Theory says so in the word and I deal with this every day don't you guys all deal with bureaucrats you do it's called red tape red tape in every system especially in government what do we think about government Sheila it's kind of there isn't it you're in government right now at the University it may be a private government but it's still a government there's clear rules of governance yes there's a chain of command there's divisions of labor separations of assets but there's also recordkeeping and documentation why is it important that we have documentation and recordkeeping at the government can't we just trust that the government says what it's doing is right why okay so what's the strength of that model accountability see I gave it to you because I picked on you what are we thinking Cecilia what's a strength of this type of model efficiency we can't use efficiency every single time give me give me a different word either that or it's a threat efficiency process shake and bake clear responsibility clear responsibility would anybody like to talk to the young County Commissioner sounds like she doesn't have that she got elected she's 28 earn in 140,000 apparently sexually harassed her um male assistant and when he didn't uh go in for the moves she fired him within 30 minutes so now people are upset because the board suspended her because well they're against democracy are they or are they clear governance we have rules that were me and I did something like that or was accused of something what should happen we have governance right we have the ways that things work why is that important why is that important K you exist in a system which has had several different sexual abuse cases when governance didn't H happen right didn't even happen to you but you want to know that you're protected correct isn't that important that you know that there is something out there that will protect you and if something bad has happened we will change it right when the athletic director unfortunately passed Miss Steve you know great guy but when he passed it's not like they can do whatever they want right all of a sudden you've got the CFO over there all of a sudden you've got the Provost all of a sudden you've got the president why is that even though it's private everyone mistakes the two that somehow this isn't a government this is a government went to they got to follow different rules there's a reason for that because accountability wise we don't think that anything's happened but we never want to have the that happen right so what's another strength to this model organization I am certified to be a part of this you know where you're going Nico notice how I was like do you have an advisor no we're going to get you one why is that should I just go what does that also hurt art accreditation it also hurts you graduating which would probably be bad well some of us would have fun with it as you know we used you as a real life example but the rest of us would probably feel sad for it's happy now it's sad Siri what's a weakness of this type of model rigid I can give the second example Cecilia have we read Animal Farm I just I don't I don't know if I I know you anymore George Well's Animal Farm talks all about these systems and it has one term all pigs are equal but some pigs are more equal than others she says rigid what if I can bend the facts to however I want what if I can manipulate the system seems like that might be a weakness right governments have the ability if you know how to manipulate them to get things to work the way you want we know we've all had ex-boyfriends or girlfriends they know how to manipulate us do they not go for it Kayla weaknesses this is not the moment to talk about your red FL boyfriend go for it say it loud of lack of time management explain that one to me oh my gosh that efficiency came back Cecilia tried to use it and we used it like avengeance somehow else sapira call me soap nope go for it what are we going to use as an opportunity in this type of model how about change I can change the model there's some openness to this model I can go wow this model isn't working does every model work because I institute it no right what would happen if I just did it my way and I never accepted any change by the way I accept all of your feedback and all of your little criticism why do I have you fill out the mandatory survey if I know that some of you are going to on me because it makes me better well but why do you do that because you want to be made better right there's a difference between you just going and you know personally attacking me and you going well I wish that he would start class on time I can make that happen right right Gavin because what is it also doing what's it also saying if I'm not staring CL I'm staring class three minutes late and always out of the out the door and you know everything else well some of you aren't getting the value so we can change that system right that's the whole point you have the ability to change Gavin what is another opportunity aside from change change the gain of responsibility you want to answer sunny sunny doesn't want to answer why not a this is fun do you want to answer give me an opportunity motivation should I motivate Sunny should I Mo oh I should motivate you okay what are the threats to this type of model Brooklyn by the way if you notice if people are that intimidated by answering I don't make them answer it does not affect their grade I would like you to answer but if it's that if it's that big of a deal we can move on right it's called change go for it but I know that you're really good at answering questions so this is also a guilt trip I can go mother-in-law guilt trip on you too don't do that my baby's so much better he should have married Clara right I want to say like anybody know what red tape means Alex give me the definition of what red tape comes from give me the history of it love history why not you don't know the history and you've used that term I guarantee you red tape is from the Civil War all the veterans had come back and anytime they went to go get their benefits it was always Bound in big red tape I.E it took a lot to get it undone I.E it was a lot of work and then nothing may get done what's one of the biggest we have about anything with state government nothing gets done you know why uhoh we got all these things but I got accountability uh oh I got a change I got gain of responsibility got motivation that sounds great but what do I also got what are the I've got to be rigid because of the laws all of the little rules we have rules here and somebody might be able to manipulate them and there's a lack of an efficient process oh my gosh that's why nothing gets done and by the way people get compartmentalized in stuff all the time which is the next one you heard of that term Brent what does that term mean that means divided or like segregated the different groups compartmentalization for a human what does that mean for a human yes Kyle in the world of baseball we have setup men we have closers can they be starters why they can pitch just as long and then after a while what happens to them that's all they do and then they prepare to only do that so do we also not prepare our people to only do certain things in this type of model so then after a while what happens to them they only seek the these types of functions notice we haven't used growth I can gain responsibility I'm motivated to gain responsibility what happens John If I gain responsibility but there's no growth lose interest I lose interest because screw it if I have to do more work and still get paid the same Sheila do we really think I'm going to do more work I'm just going to do the work I do right I'm showing up it's almost 5:00 it's 5:49 right 4:49 got to leave right not working those extra hours do we think that that's maybe a problem yeah okay so what's a what's a threat to close this out what's the biggest threat it's like she heard me I feel heard I feel heard isn't that a isn't that a horrible thing anybody feel stuck in their life has anybody ever felt stuck in your life unlike Nico who constantly every single time gets up halfway through walks out exactly and he gets to find that I'm going to lock the door behind him now so what is it what what's the problem there Cecilia we talked about this uh uh Wednesday it's a problem with no growth stagnant water right why is that bad why can't you just do the same job over and over again for the next 29 years like your grandparents did who cares you've got a job you've got a career you've got a you've got retirement we've given you everything what do you care if you're doing the same job over and over again and how and how often does your mind kind of recess why do you think people read books that have nothing to do with their actual job you know they'll go read a book somewhere why do you think they do that Cecilia they go off on a break and read a book they already have a job why would they read a romance novel Stephen King whatever why would they go do something else what does it do Alex because their stimulation because what happens if we don't stimulate become stag atrophy you can atrophy more than just your body your mind I'm not saying that everyone has to get out a book on astronomy but you need to like have some type of Interest right I'm not saying this all the time because if you throw stuff at people too much then they get overwhelmed but if you don't give them anything and this is exactly why we have the problems we have at state government congratulations I feel like you know some person that feels that the government is completely horrible and should never exist I don't believe that way but you C you have to see its flaws in order to know how to change it of course this thing then breaks so now we come to the Douglas McGregor model you guys saw this in your book did you not or you will depending on how far you got do anybody to the Douglas McGregor model yet of X and Y Alex I'm sure you're just buzzing right through it you haven't Kyle yeah okay Define it for me what is X x is more like the biocracy model like a hierarchy and stuff like that and then Y is more about the opportunity for employees to grow okay so X micromanagers anybody ever dealt with a micromanager called helicopter moms sometimes they want too much of the best for you right overwhelming always in your business you can never do it right no matter what Nico how has that worked out for you every single time you've had somebody that is just and it doesn't mean hey get this done but no matter what you do it is never exactly right I I feel annoyed when they do that is that just annoyed or do you feel like basically overwhelmed M that you no matter what's the point right poor Ethan is sitting there and no matter what he does his father will never hug him the same way because he never made the wrestling team right well you know what I'm getting at right there's always this there's always this measurement with certain people or you didn't do this or we did this better and by the way when you usually talk to those people and then you find out their history you find out most of it is Rosy which makes it even harder doesn't it because they're frauds right right Kyle I mean let's be honest right like everyone always pitched harder than you we were always better than you no every baseball team right every baseball team they always have this lore of all this crap that they were able to do and then you look at it and you go you won five games a year the hell did you do oh they were the most dominant blah blah blah but they never won when we when the way we never were there's a book out about it because everyone uh romanticizes about 20 years prior when they were young about how awesome it was and you know what you find out usually not that awesome usually it was just as boring just had as many issues I bring up issues that you guys could see if you ever watch stranger things everyone's romanticizing that and somebody got upset about the first season cuz I didn't go after that girl that was missing I was like that's what happened you just saw things on a milk carton one day and I guess she's gone that's it yeah there's no Amber Alert that's why we have Amber Alerts now 40 years later took 40 Years of people going missing and not more right so but everyone will romanticize how awesome the 80s were 80s were stupid you know so you have to kind of realize what that is and than why right more of the free thinkers what's the problem with free thinkers Kyle they they want they do what they want why is that a problem like in a workplace yeah why is that a problem why do you care why do you care if I didn't uh secure that bolt get off me bro I've been having a hard time my girl left I didn't I didn't secure all those lug nuts on that plane that Cecilia is getting on with Kayla sorry I was having a bad day lady left in the middle of the night yeah you think you think that's acceptable isn't that why we sometimes have managers right do we have managers just so Daniel can go hey man get off my back or do we have some people going uh hi well it would help if it wasn't fully closed thanks Nico I didn't know someone went out well how about we not leave for no reason go to the bathroom yeah how about we figure that out beforehand thank you thank you driveth through then don't drink as much water um if I can talk for three hours without going to the bathroom so can you unless you have a disability services thing and then we can chat with that person but that being said right we've got to make sure that some kind of standards are held right Gavin you don't really feel I should just be able to do whatever I want when I'm on an assembly line or on something what if I'm working for the state you know uh she likes her check every month she's a employee or whatever she's doing should I just like go it's me time it's me time we have a flexible work schedule sorry your stuff just didn't get done do we really think that's going to work why not need order we need order so what are the strengths of this model you give me the strengths of X and Y both of them together this helps become adaptiv ability Logan knowing X and Y knowing them what are the strengths um you make sure things get done Nico what are the strengths of this model of understanding the difference between X and Y accountability you think give me something more because I've heard that word too much time and I want more accountability to you give it to me John um as far as the why uh Crea both of them that you're actually identifying so what are the strengths of knowing this so this is more of you knowing it knowing that both exist um with both of them I guess it uh allows a creativity with a sort of structure with the I'm not going to write every word you say Milani knowing that both of these models exist within that model the X and the Y what is that what's the strength of that how important is that we talk about accountability how important is that to be aware of your faults Le how important is that to be aware of your faults the things you're not good at how important very why also sh them up Sunny aside from picking your nose what what other faults do you have having fun with you Sunny what what what how is it important as a manager to know what The Faults Are yeah so one of the films that you can watch uh for extra credit in this a class is American Factory and you'll see the difference between uh Chinese owners uh that buy a factory in America and then the differences between the two models right and cleaning up glass and Americans tend to not want to clean up broken glass without gloves the Chinese owners are like I don't understand what the problem is do you think that we're not getting enough awareness to the Chinese owners at that point it's not a not a xenophobic thing but it's supposed to show you that certain groups don't kind of think of things right so is it important that maybe they they are aware of their faults aware of how they act Brent what's a weakness of knowing this you can be I'm going at least try to do it correctly is that Gen X right is that spelling Nazi and a all been God it's a weakness aside from the fact you took this class which means you get picked on what's going on maybe U you w able to look at all that kind of like what he said tunnel vision we'll give it to him this time won't we Brent see we'll collaborate go for it I know I smelled something burning what what's going on okay okay oh I'm sorry I was that was your answer Daniel what's a weakness I think those theories are like too simplified people can be both X and Y I think that somebody got it that everybody's not one or the other and maybe they're a complicated mix I don't know do you feel that you're simple nobody ever by the way feels that they're uncomplicated so if I treat them like they're simple what happens to them what's a respect level if I treat you like you're simple Cecilia I just treat you like you're simple what happens when how do you view me think you would view me as like maybe just no it starts with an R what do you think of me what what what drops it's an r word respect right because obviously I don't respect you enough to kind of get to know you as a person or to think that you're complex enough to be able to handle different tasks maybe you can micromanage on certain things but maybe you can you know be freethinking on others maybe we have to go through all the safety standards and maybe we have to check all that stuff yes that's one thing but we also don't have to do that with every single component of work Cecilia if I did that and we knew that there were certain things that I had to be hammered on right we're going to hammer on this and it's not others would you also not give me some Grace and also realizing that maybe it's just making sure that certain things have to happen right food safety you exist in it do you not think that there is some food safety stand that your restaurant has to go through and that if all of a sudden I start putting food on the wrong trays and the refrigerator or if I do this or I do that we don't think there's somebody that goes hey no got to fix this is that micr managing no just what do I care if s gets sick she bought her food who who gives a I got mine I'm a freeth thinker El I know but who is she right super do you suddenly have an investment of you're not getting sick of us having a micromanaging um activity in a certain amount of things sorry we're not going to we're not going to negotiate with that okay what are the opportunities sapira what are the opportunities knowing these models exist I got four minutes what happened with Moneyball what was the biggest problem with Moneyball the fact that all of the people even if it worked they were going to dismiss it right by the way they also didn't account for several of the players that were on there that had nothing to do with money Ball but we'll side step that and come back to that in a minute the point is right you had a group of people that were intentionally ignoring it based off of the fact that they didn't want to know it exists was that healthy for them exactly Kayla what's an opportunity here expanding expand on that you can't just use a word without telling me the term super galif fragil list I said the word so go for it I only got three minutes come on we'll go with that Alex the same things by the way giving you knowledge they can all be the same you're not going to have so much but you got to you got to actually know what you don't know threats what's a threat to this type of model I want to use a different word you don't think we can exploit this model no you don't have to look at that we can we can look at something else we can be hardcore on something else we don't have to look at this work you can't see that Kyle you can't see the people would do that well I see people would do that that's my point issue right Logan finish it out what's the worst threat we can think of aside from nuclear war Thermon nuclear war um people eating pets in Springfield Ohio new one on me go for it what um maybe manag not about I think that's a good one okay next week we got a lot of fun things we even got our first guest speaker on next Wednesday as Kyle goes and assaults him burb yes cheekster no they're all Blended together thank you very much for your time enjoy
