What is Time?

  • Common definitions: calendar, measure of activity
  • Key Idea: Time is an emotion or feeling
  • Stress arises when we forget our feelings and focus solely on tasks
  • Fulfillment is often lacking even when tasks are completed (movement vs. achievement)

The Role of Focus

  • Focus determines feelings and success levels
  • Our focus is often reactive rather than conscious
  • Three things that grab our focus:
    1. Pain/Fear: Worry about potential problems
    2. Pleasure: Immediate gratification leading to distractions
    3. External Demands: Responding to others' urgencies
  • Reactive focus leads to stress and lack of fulfillment

The Power of Focus

  • The ability to focus is a powerful personal tool
  • Example: Auto racing - focusing on where to go to avoid crashing
  • Key Lesson: Focusing on desired outcomes increases chances of success
  • Focusing on fears will lead to failure

Controlling Focus

  • Positive Thinking vs. Realism:
    • See life as it is, not worse than it is
    • Visioning: Knowing what you want is crucial
  • Questions to Shift Focus:
    • Ask better questions to get better answers
    • Example: "How can I lose weight and enjoy it?"

The OPA System

  • OPA stands for:
    1. Outcome: Know what you really want
    2. Purpose: Understand why you want it
    3. Action: Identify steps to achieve it
  • Importance of clarity and measurement for success
  • Shift focus from tasks to outcomes for fulfillment

Dimensions of Time Management

  • Escape Dimension: Distractions that are not urgent or important
  • Delusion Dimension: Urgent but not important tasks (like excessive emails)
  • Demand Dimension: Urgent and important tasks (deadlines, responsibilities)
  • Fulfillment Dimension: Important but not urgent tasks (health, relationships)
  • Goal: Spend majority of time in the fulfillment dimension
