CNA Procedure: Checking Pulse

Introduction

  • Greeting and Introduction:
    • Start with proper hygiene: Wash hands.
    • Greet the patient: "Knock knock. Good morning, my name is Xavier."
    • Introduce yourself: "I'll be your CNA for today."

Patient Interaction

  • Verify Patient Identity:
    • Ask permission to check the name band: "Is it okay if I check your name band?"
    • Confirm patient identity: "Mrs. Smith, nice to meet you."
    • Ask preference for address: "How would you like to be addressed?"

Procedure

  • Pulse Check:
    • Explain the procedure: "Is it okay if I check your pulse today?"
    • Locate radial pulse:
      • Place fingertips on the thumb side of the client's wrist.
    • Count the beats for one full minute.

Closing

  • Provide Call Light:
    • Ensure the patient has access to the call light: "Mrs. Smith, here is your call light."
  • Post-Procedure Hygiene:
    • Wash hands before recording.

Recording Results

  • Accuracy:
    • Record the pulse rate within plus or minus four beats of the evaluator's reading.

Notes

  • Ensure all interactions are respectful and maintain the patient’s dignity.
  • Follow infection control practices throughout the procedure.
