What is Metabolic Syndrome?

  • Combination of disorders

Risk Factors

Signs and Symptoms

Diagnostic Criteria

  • Diagnosis requires at least 3 of the following:
    1. Waist circumference:
    • Over 40 inches (men)
    • Over 35 inches (women)
    1. Triglyceride level: Over 150
    2. HDL level:
    • Under 40 (men)
    • Under 50 (women)
    1. Fasting glucose: ≥ 100
    2. Blood pressure:
    • Systolic: Over 130
    • Diastolic: Over 85

Treatment

  • Lifestyle changes:
    • Lose weight
    • Heart-healthy diet
    • Increase physical activity
    • Reduce stress
    • Get enough sleep
    • Quit smoking
  • Medications:
    • Blood pressure medications
    • Cholesterol medications
    • Anti-diabetic medications
