Lecture Notes: Structure of Specifications

Overview of Specifications

  • Specifications are organized by sections.
  • Commonly follow a structured format.
  • A well-known format comes from the Construction Specification Institute (CSI).

Construction Specification Institute (CSI)

  • CSI is an organization that maintains standards for construction language in specifications and documents.
  • They have developed a standardized numbering system known as Master Format.

Master Format

  • Numbering System: Uses a six-digit numbering system.
  • Purpose: Identifies requirements, products, and activities in the construction industry.
  • Divisions:
    • There are 50 related divisions.
    • Not all division numbers are used; some are reserved for future expansion.

Example: Division 25 - Integrated Automation

  • Level 1: First two numbers (e.g., 25) represent the top level and identify the division.
  • Levels 2-4: Remaining numbers and titles represent further detailed levels, identifying related areas within the division.

Recap

  • Reviewed the structure of specifications and the use of the CSI Master Format.
  • Discussed Division 25 as an example to understand the breakdown of levels within the CSI format structure.
