Athenian Social Classes

  1. Upper Class

    • Composed of wealthy native-born citizen males
    • Involved in politics and high military ranks
  2. Middle Class (Metics)

    • Typically merchants and traders who settled in Athens
    • Did not have full citizenship rights
  3. Lower Class

    • Freedmen who were once slaves
    • Could earn money but lacked citizenship and privileges
  4. Slaves

    • Lowest class with no rights
    • Owned by Athenian masters
    • Could pay ransom to gain freedom
  5. Women

    • Outside of formal social classes
    • Status linked to fathers/husbands
    • Limited to domestic roles

Spartan Social Classes

  1. Spartiates

    • Privileged full citizens
    • Dedicated to military training
    • Owned helots and participated in political matters
  2. Perioikoi

    • Second-class citizens (men and women)
    • Could own land and serve in the army
    • Lacked political rights
  3. Helots

    • State-owned agricultural and military servants
    • Could not be freed
    • High population created fear of revolt
