Overview

  • HRV is a communicable infectious virus.
  • Causes inflammation of the nasal mucosa (rhinitis).
  • Primarily responsible for upper respiratory tract infections.

Symptoms

  • Common symptoms include:
    • Runny nose
    • Nasal congestion
    • Sneezing
    • Sore throat
    • Cough

Characteristics

  • Over 100 known serologic types cause the common cold in humans.
  • Belongs to the P. corneviridae family of viruses.
  • Virion Properties:
    • Naked viruses (lack a lipid membrane).
    • Approximately 30 nanometers in diameter.
    • Surrounded by an icosahedral capsid:
      • Spherical protein shell.
      • Composed of 20 equilateral triangular faces.
