Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs)

Overview

  • IFSP is a form of early intervention.
  • Research highlights the importance of early interventions in altering a child's developmental path.

Key Characteristics of IFSPs

  • Eligibility: Only for students found eligible.
  • Services Included:
    • Speech therapy
    • Psychological services
    • Medical services
    • Hearing support
    • Occupational therapy
    • And more.

Distinction from IEPs

  • IFSPs focus on the family, whereas IEPs focus on the student.
  • Recognize the family as crucial to the child's development.

Implementation

  • Designed and implemented by the IFSP team.
  • Must occur in the child's natural environment (usually the child's home).
  • Plan includes desirable outcomes and objectives focused on improving areas of weakness.

Steps for Parents

  • If developmental delays are suspected, contact:
    • Local education agency (school district)
    • State health department
  • Eligibility: Birth to age three.
  • Post-age three: Testing for an IEP is possible.
