we gotta get into tides right so tides are this rhythmic motion of ocean water um rising and falling the cool part uh about being here in southern california is that most of you have been to the beach and you've seen the tides kind of you you've seen a high tide or a low tide you kind of know what i'm talking about i mean imagine teaching oceanography right in some landlocked state in the u.s like idaho people might not really know about tides it'd be a lot more difficult to explain but in any case um i'm just i really love talking about this stuff i hope it you can hear it in my voice i'm excited to talk to you about tides and today what we're going to start with is a conversation about the the reasonings or the major factors that contribute to our tides right so we're going to be looking at the sun the earth and the moon okay those three things if we get an understanding of how these are interacting then we're going to know the tides really well so the first part of this week is going to be all about uh moon earth and sun interactions and then the second part is going to be the actual um rhythmic rise and fall of the tides and going to the beach sort of a deal and watching that that that water rise up or fall back down so let's get into it let's start here okay so what we're seeing is we've got the sun right earth is orbiting around the sun okay the moon is also orbiting around us okay so i know this might be um something that you already know but i got to make sure we all know this together okay so let's make sure we understand again earth orbits around the sun the moon orbits around the earth this is what creates our tides so let's take a look at uh what we got in this lecture all right so here we got a nice picture of the moon here we are right and this is the lit up portion of the moon right so that's uh you're seeing that side because of the sun's uh rays and then on this side you're actually not that's not lit up but you can see it for a reason that we'll talk about in a little bit all right so i'm sure all of you have seen the moon this is going to be part of your assignment coming up right you're going to actually have to do some things with the moon take a look at your uh in class assignments and um you'll see something attached there about what you have to do this week alright um with the moon now think about this right the moon have you ever been have you ever been to a place where you feel like you might be the only one that's ever set foot there you know almost feels like wow no one's ever been here um i for instance i climbed a couple mountains and i got to the top before and i just felt like maybe no one's ever been up to this this peak you know um and i know that there have been but it just kind of feels that way another example i had was you know i was on that boat trip that i talked about last lecture and i climbed this tiny little remote island and i got up to the top of it and it just felt like no one had ever been on that island before but lo and behold i come back down to the beach and i can see there's a couple tiny little huts fishermen had shown up and and they were drying fish out on the beach so it's tough to find those places where no one's ever been but i know that you might have felt that feeling before for instance here the moon right it's it's one of those places where you really would feel that way so as far as the facts go right the moon is the only world if you will beyond earth visited by humans we're it's the only place we've actually landed as a human uh you know species um and only 12 astronauts have walked there from 1969 to 1972 and yeah it's just kind of one of those places that you kind of get that feeling from of actually no one else has ever walked there before so something like this you know you look out this lunar landscape and you're just like wow no one is no one's here no one's ever set foot here it's a pretty interesting feeling and i hope you felt that before um and please share your stories with me if you have it's so fun to talk about stuff like that and share them with your friends share them with your family share them with me whatever you want to do share them though it's it's really important i think it inspires people to go do similar things um so here we go the moon right it completes one orbit or what we call a revolution so around earth every 27 and one third day so as you can see earth right or remember earth is orbiting the sun okay remember that wow all of this is happening okay so let's take another look at this if we think about what's occurring earth's orbiting the sun it's also rotating which gives us our night and day right and then the moon is orbiting around us and that orbit around us to get back to its original position as it's going to make its way all the way right to where it started right there there it is that's 27 and one third day okay so that takes one full circle around the earth 27 and 130 days make sure you know that okay moon completes one orbit about earth every 27 and one-third days also notice in this video um how right here the moon is always lit up in the same spot and it's actually the same zone that the earth is lit up see see the right hand side of the earth is lit up left hand side is dark right hand side of the moon is lit up left hand side is dark that's something we're going to get into um but yeah notice it it orbits around earth every 27 and one-third days great now if we take a look at what the moon looks like through time what we're going to see is from earth if you're just standing there watching the moon within that um that orbit that it's taking right you're gonna watch the moon slowly uh change its phase right so we're going to get into what all the phases are called but this is an idea of what the moon would look like each night it's slowly changing every night you'd see it get a little bit smaller a little smaller a little smaller until oh does anyone know what this is called new moon right this is new moon and then oh it's starting to get bigger bigger bigger bigger until first quarter right and then it gets larger until oh full moon right and then next thing you got third quarter right or last quarter and then right back to new moon right and that does that over and over and over and over so that's our lunar phase cycle what are these different things called let's get into that okay what is it called notice also we're only seeing one side of the moon we're never seeing the back side of the moon or the far side of the moon or even called the dark side of the moon you're only seeing one side we're going to talk about why that is so here you go what does new moon look like exactly this just a pure dark screen right you're not seeing anything that's because when you look out in the night sky when it's a new moon there's no moon to be seen because the back side is completely lit up the front side that you normally see there's no sunlight shining on it so therefore you don't see it it's a new moon now let's continue on our next part of our phase cycle right this is the phase cycle of the moons we've got waxing crescent so here is a waxing crescent the right hand side notice the right hand side of the moon that's the only sliver that's lit up that's kind of that thumbnail or toenail that you might see or a banana shape right but it's the right hand side so that's a waxing crescent what does waxing mean waxing means growing so if the right hand side of the moon is lit up that means each night that you go out successively so if you go out on a friday night and you see this waxing crescent moon you know that saturday night it's going to be a little bit bigger there's going to be a little bit more moon showing right and progressively bigger and bigger and bigger until full moon so as long as it's growing it's called waxing okay so here is day if you were on the moon you'd be enjoying day right and over on the left hand side this would be night so you could imagine if you were on the moon just chilling out you know you're hanging out um doing your thing this if you were in this location you'd be experiencing night and if you were in this location you'd be experiencing day what does that mean what is this what is this whole line called the the spot between night and day what would that be called sunrise exactly so right there if you were living right here you would actually be experiencing sunrise on the moon kind of interesting thoughts right something i i would definitely pose a question to you in class something i'd always ask is who would go to the moon tomorrow if they could if there was some sort of shuttle service that got you to the moon and you got to go and hang out on the moon who would go you know ask your friends that ask your family that for me i i just i can't say i would go and you might know why uh there's just no waves right there's no waves so i guess maybe during this coven 19 breakout maybe i'd think about it a little bit more yeah might as well go to the moon since surfing's illegal right then maybe i'd go to the moon but if surfing's legal and i get to go surf i don't think i have any interest in going to the moon i get to see it all the time for me all the special things in life are found right here on earth and i'm so appreciative of earth right but i know that some of you probably really really love the moon and and you might want to just go out there and explore it i totally get that and that's an awesome thing to be doing right and just following these things that you want to do now let's continue on all right we got waxing crescent here you know about night and day and sunrise another term for that that zone on the moon right is called the terminator okay this isn't your arnold schwarzenegger terminator all right this is just a term that they use for the distinction between night and day on the moon where sunrise would be so if you see a uh someone someone looking through a telescope right which happened to me i was walking in downtown encinitas and uh someone was just looking through their telescope in the night sky and said hey would you like to see saturn and i was like really you know no way really and he goes yeah take a seat so i took a seat i looked through his uh telescope and boom there it was i could see saturn he had this big telescope and it was it was awesome but if you ever see someone and you want to kind of sound a little like you know a little bit more than maybe you might right just kind of fit in with the crowd get somebody talking a little bit more you might ask them if they're looking through the telescope at the moon you go are you looking at the terminator right and that would be a very good way to uh you know probably make a friend and and have some fun talking to somebody and you might learn some more stuff so the terminator not arnold schwarzenegger all right let's move on that's the dis that's the line between night and day
