Experiment 3 Procedure by Benjamin Frachem

Introduction

  • The focus is on part 2 of the experiment.
  • The setup is complete up to step 8.

Experimental Setup

  • Equipment Used:
    • 50ml Erlenmeyer flask with stir bar.
    • Stir plate operational.
    • Sparkling air unit connected to a laptop to measure pressure and temperature.

Trial Summaries

Trial 1: Standard Trial

  • Components:
    • Water: 6 ml
    • Hydrogen Peroxide: 1 ml
    • Catalase Solution: 3 ml
  • Procedure:
    • Add catalase solution, insert rubber stopper to start collecting pressure data.
    • Focus on initial pressure data points to determine reaction rate.

Trial 2: Increased Substrate Concentration

  • Components:
    • Water: 4 ml
    • Hydrogen Peroxide: 3 ml
    • Catalase Solution: 3 ml
  • Procedure:
    • Similar procedure as Trial 1.
    • Observations showed higher pressure readings.
    • Risk of stopper popping off due to increased pressure.

Trial 3: Temperature Variation

  • Components (same as Trial 1):
    • Water: 6 ml
    • Hydrogen Peroxide: 1 ml
    • Catalase Solution: 3 ml
  • Conditions:
    • Flask placed in a hot bath at 40°C.
  • Purpose:
    • To observe the effect of temperature on reaction rate.

Conclusion

  • Three trials completed with variations in substrate concentration and temperature.
  • Further trials would follow the same pattern.
  • Data will be shared separately or at the end of the presentation.
