Definition

  • An expository essay presents information about a specific topic.
  • Requires knowledge or research about the topic.
  • Requires good organization and a neutral tone.

Characteristics of Expository Writing

  • Types of Content:
    • Describing something
    • Listing order of events
    • Comparing and contrasting items
    • Explaining cause and effect
    • Describing a problem and a solution

Common Uses

  • Commonly found in essay questions on tests.
  • Example Questions:
    • "What are three important factors that led to the American Revolutionary War?"
    • "Describe life on a farm. Use as many specific details as you can."

Objectivity in Expository Essays

  • Most objective type of essay; focuses on presenting accurate information without bias.
  • Avoids taking a stand or making an argument.

Structure of an Expository Essay

  1. Introduction
    • Attention getter
    • Thesis statement (often a three-pronged thesis)
  2. Body Paragraphs
    • Each paragraph covers one of the points made in the thesis
  3. Conclusion
    • Restates the thesis and summarizes the main points

Writing Style

  • Tone should be formal.
  • Avoid slang and casual language (e.g., don't use"lol").
  • Avoid personal "I" statements (e.g., use "England is a great place to visit" instead of "I think England is a nice place to visit").

Research and References

  • If conducting research for a paper, include a reference page.
  • For tests with no preparation, references are usually not needed.
