all your heart and lean not to your own understanding in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight very popular scripture one of the most comforting verse it is to cling [Music] to when you're facing [Music] uncertainty might be something that's real positive real exciting just don't know how it's all going to come together but you know what it is or maybe it's something that's very burdening and weighing you down [Music] and it's one of those but God moments in your life if you're facing uncertainty just be honest we're the family of God just raise your hand nice and high yeah pretty much almost everybody facing some uncertainty needing some guidance some direction some understanding some healing some Provisions Whatever It Is Our Hope and our trust is in God it's not in man it's not in your place of [Music] employment it's not in your paycheck it's not in family a lot of times it's ultimately it's in God our trust is in him for the now for the future whatever the case may be our trust is in you God we recognize that right here right now We Trust You Lord it's a new song we haven't done this one here yet you've probably heard it before many of you but again I love it cuz I set this TR felt like prayerfully considering the songs and I felt like this set list was going to be really a good one and sent it out to everybody and my brother back here working on live stream Kevin Russell he texts me back he goes so I'm guessing the theme is trust yeah that's it that's it we all need that reminder on a daily basis many times Our Hope and our trust is not in ourselves it's not in others it's ultimately it's in God and in God alone [Music] letting of every single dream I lay each one down at your feet every moment of my [Music] wondering never changes what you see I tried to win this War I confess my hands are weary I need your rest mighty warrior king of the fight no matter what I face you're by my side when you don't move the I'm need you to move when sweet to trust in Jesus just to take him at his word just to rest upon his promise and to know the [Music] sa Jes Jesus Jesus how I trust him how I prove him more and more Jesus Jesus preious Jesus Oh for Grace to trust him one more time oh Jesus Jesus how I trust him how I prove him more and Jesus Jesus preious Jesus Oh for Grace to trust him more oh for Grace to trust him Hallelujah come on give him praise today Hallelujah he's given us every reason imaginable to trust him he is faithful hallelujah we're going to move into just a a time of prayer as we commit our children and our students to the Lord this morning as some have already begun school um a few have already left for college but I know Branson some other area schools begin this week and our students are so excited about that I could just sense that it's in the air today I I believe our can somebody just check right outside there I believe our younger kids are out there they're just waiting for the queue to come on in are they there oh man security security somebody radio Pastor [Music] Ben well this is what this is a big ask I want to invite not only all of our students but um those of you who work with our students whether you are a parent who works with them at home um you work in a network um of homeschoolers uh you're a teacher faculty member bus driver um whatever it might be whatever facet you might work in uh we'd love for you to come we're not going to force you to come but uh here they are they're right back there let's give it up for uh our awesome kids as they come on in are they back there all right students uh want to invite you to come on [Music] up I I'll call you out if I need to yes come on up here we want all of you to give a speech about what you're going to do this year no we just want to pray with you we just want to pray with you don't be nothing nothing dangerous is going to happen here all right there we go well you may receive a call from God if you come a little too close but that's what we're going for right come on up all right now our our kids from kids church are here let's give it up for them aren't they awesome we love you guys come on in here come on in here teachers administrators those of you who work in schools um I'm going to invite Pastor Ben our kids uh our kids Pastor to come on up here I'm going to pray for I'm going to pray over our students and I've invited Pastor Ben to pray over those those of you who work with our our students amen thank you Lord thank you Lord so the lord gave me this scripture and this really goes along with what we're singing about trusting in the Lord and the series that we're in Divine Direction seeking God's will God's plan that sort of thing this scripture is for it's for all of us but particularly this morning all of our students [Music] um no matter what stage you're at in life you're you're going to be looking towards the future and even as a young at a young age how many of you remember like uh early on first second grade where you'd have like career day and people would come in and share their careers and you be like I want to do that um I remember the first career that that I wanted to choose was I wanted to be a a New York City Sanitation worker I thought it was the coolest thing to jump on the back back of those trucks and just hang on and ride around for those you who don't know I I grew up in New York so that was like the coolest thing later I wanted to be a police officer um then then a few other things but here's the thing no matter what you find yourself doing the Bible tells us to just do it unto the Lord Bible tells us in Proverbs 37 and verse 5 commit everything that you do to the Lord trust him and he will help you if you commit everything to the Lord you say Lord this is what I want to do this is what I'm working towards doing I just give it to you and I trust in you and the Lord will lead you Proverbs 16:3 says commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed you see it's not a guessing game with God it's not a guessing game whatever you decide to do you commit it to the Lord so students in your work this year um parents leaders teachers administrators those of you who work with our students whatever it is that you are able to do this year do it as unto the Lord commit it to the Lord and trust that he will cause your plans your actions to succeed so would you just extend your hand to our students this morning first of all father we thank you so much for these incredible young men and young women from our youngest student kindergarten those in preschool kindergarten on up to our our seniors in high school to those that are going off to college maybe for the first time maybe it's their last year of school father we just pray as as they commit their way to you Lord God that they would learn to trust you learn to lead on you when when things are scary when they don't know what to do when they're having a difficult time learning that they would just trust in you Lord Jesus that they'd give it to you and that God you will send them help maybe it's one of one of those the teachers or or parents that are standing here today that will come alongside of them and help them and teach them so we commit them to you Lord God this morning we ask for protection upon all of our schools all of our homes in the name of Jesus we pray for your Divine Direction God over each of our schools thank you God for the atmosphere at least that we sense in our local schools Lord God of Godly men and women who are leading our students we just pray that God you would continue to direct their steps God give them great influence over our students but most importantly today I pray for each of our students that you would bless them this year that you would help them that you would strengthen them in the name of Jesus thank you Lord Pastor B father we thank you Lord we thank you so much for those that you have called lord to be teachers administrators and faculty and staff workers Lord in our school systems we recognize Lord that it is a very very vital and important mission that they are on Lord we we thank you God for the heart that they have for our kids Lord whether it's serving food or teaching in a classroom or helping to guide people in our school systems I pray in the name of Jesus that you would bless them so that they can in turn be a blessing to our kids I pray God that you would go before them in the power of your spirit May opportunity after opportunity come up Lord so that they can Shine Your Love and your care and God that they can be the hope and the joy Lord that that some kids may not see elsewhere but they will see in them and their interactions with them provide opportunities God moments Jesus moments um appointments Lord in time where these kids can see you reflected in those that that love you and those that are in our schools systems Lord I pray Lord that you would guide lead and direct Empower them Lord And We Just Praise You for what you're going to do this school year and the lives of our students and the lives of those that serve them we just UST this year to you and we praise you and we thank you for what you're going to do it's in the mighty and Powerful name of Jesus we pray amen amen amen come on sh your love for all of our students teachers faculty members we love you guys amen amen all right well as our kids are heading back to children's church um and our students and teachers and every Everybody heads back to their seats why don't you just take a few moments greet a few people maybe there's somebody there that you don't you don't know their name great opportunity great opportunity right now to just say hello to them [Music] good morning GCA family it's a good day to be in God's house isn't it amen I love this this just my heart student Ministry wow just such life in our church and may we never take that for granted um we are really blessed here at GCA are we not with these amazing students children we have many who do work in the school system and we covet uh your church uh family we cover your prayers on their behalf too we know that God can use them mightily so good morning I am Pastor Jen if you are uh worshiping with us for the first time I am Pastor John's wife I'm the associate pastor here and we just want to say thank thank you for choosing to be with us this morning and worship we are so glad you are here you will find a connect card in the seatbacks in front of you if you would be so kind as to fill that out whether you're just in town for the weekend and visiting or if you are from the Branson area and visiting thank you for being our honored guests and if you would fill that connect card out we would love to get you to know you better and we also have a welcome gift for you at the connect Center if you could take that um there will be someone there to meet you at the end of service and give you your uh gift as well all right so we have a lot going on here at GCA but um if you came in this morning at both of the entrances here uh there were Church bulletins available to you if you did not get one be sure and grab one on your way out but I just want to highlight a few things coming up uh first of all our Hospitality Ministry is incredibly important what don't you say it's it's phenomenal and it's a great way to get plugged in and serve at GCA and we are currently in need of more serve team members for our Hospitality Ministry so if you are interested in being a greeter would you please see myself Pastor John or Patty Davis Patty would you just lift your hand if you're okay in the back all right if you would see one of the three of us we would love to talk with you you also please note that on a connect card even if you've attended for years take a connect card because there are also spots on there to make note of you wanting to get involved in a specific Ministry so if you would do that this morning that would be awesome um Church Softball has begun as of now our record is one in one all right so way to go team um there are games this week as well just something I wanted to highlight which is different we have no say in this but something that is new to the Church Softball League this year is there is a fee for spectators okay so if you plan on going the admission fee is $3 for adults $2 uh for ages 12 to 16 okay and under so make note of that but there is a Church Softball uh this week Thursday at 7 and 800 p.m. at the reclex ladies we have an opportunity to go see Lisa Turk Hurst and Natalie Grant on the trust God Tour trust again common theme this morning um coming up that is in October October 29th but we need to purchase our tickets so there is a sign up at the connect Center so if you haven't already you can sign up the morning next Sunday will be the cut off date so that we can purchase our tickets okay the cost is $40 and next Sunday will be the deadline so make sure you stop by the connect Center kids ministry we got a lot going on uh fun arts festival is coming up Junior Bible quiz if you are interested in your kiddos getting really involved and uh knowing and studying the word of God in a greater way this is an awesome opportunity to do that all right um just make note of some other announcements in your bulletins but at this time I'm going to welcome our ushers to come forward as we prepare our hearts to continue to Worship the Lord in our giving um how many of you guys had just an amazing Summer Okay mixed reviews how many of you guys are looking forward to fall oh oh okay okay well again um I just love even as the seasons change just know that God remains faithful and in our lives I I know personally of of many very pressing needs right now with uh family and friends that I love dearly facing very serious health diagnosis and um just situations where they really need a miracle just know that God is able this morning he is so faithful and even though the seasons of our lives change we can trust him fully because he remains our constant our constant and whatever you're going through this morning just know that it matters to him that he sees exactly where you are so as we worship him in our giving Let's Just Surrender everything up to him this morning if you would join me in prayer father God we just come into your presence this morning as we already have been you have been here meeting with us ministering but Lord we just want to take this time to say God we surrender we surrender everything Lord um whatever is heavy on our hearts on our minds needs that we are aware of e either on our own behalf or on behalf of loved ones God we lift them up to you and we pray oh God that you would do what only you could do God we thank you for the the privilege that we have to come together and worship you in our giving God we know that there are many that are facing Financial mountains what it looks like in the natural but God we know that is nothing to you Lord God that you are able to provide miraculously and so God as we worship you in our giving today I just pray that you would strengthen your people that you would increase our faith help us Lord God to trust you in every area of Our Lives Lord God whatever the need may be we pray Lord God that you would bless um our offering and tithes as we give to you in this moment Lord and we thank you for the privilege to Worship You In This Way in Jesus name amen amen amen all right give it up for my lovely wife oh I get I get so sidetracked when I see her hey hey hey hey just think she's so beautiful she's doing a wonderful job oh it's my turn well I want to share something with you um that uh that's a it's a pressing need really uh you've heard me say time and time again thank you so much for your faithfulness um in your in your tithes and in your offerings and I will say as a as a leadership team we live within a budget here at GCA we create a budget every year we do our very best to stay within budget but how many of of you know that sometimes there's some unexpected expenses that pop up and you know what the church building is no different and um I've it's caused me a lot of stress and I I need to learn to trust in God my savior my provider right and so I just want to share this need with you and in in no way again does this mean uh We've made some mistakes as a leadership team and we haven't been able to pay bills or whatever um so number one the most pressing need uh would be our electric bill can you believe that um so we we had it's it's been an unusually high uh year and usually on high high uh summer and so we had some difficulties with our billing to make a long story short uh we are we have part of it um and again we are we're still we're still in the black um each and every month uh that means that that we're in the positive each and every month but but our bill uh that is due the end of this month is $110,000 and so we have some of it we have money in reserves I'm I'm so thankful for our Deacon team our leadership team uh that has given us the wisdom to be able to save um for a rainy day and uh unfortunately we've had to use our rainy day fund when it's rained around here to fix leaks in the roof and so um that being said we do have a we do have a large bill so that's coming up the end of the month and the other need is that everything in this building is getting it's starting to show his its age and if you remember about five years ago we had to uh was just when we first came on on board here all of our big HVAC systems uh were on their way out so we had to take out a loan and finance that and I think to the tune of about $150,000 uh to replace all of those bigger units how many of you enjoy air conditioning here in the auditorium um that was the biggest expense and so thankfully uh we've been able to work on paying it off and we've paid a little bit extra here and there and we have dwindled that down to just under I just think just about $35,000 so that's a significant amount in in four years that we've been able to pay off on that and so we're facing U you know some other bigger things down the road but with that uh we also um have building codes and so we had our our um inspection just a couple of weeks ago fire inspection and they notified us a couple years ago that our fire panel which directs everything in here was on borrowed time and that time has expired it we found out two weeks ago that it was not going to pass inspection so we had to order a new fire panel and uh then we found out that the power supply to that fire panel also is outdated and can no longer be repaired all of that and some of the pull stations that we had to change out uh came to a total of about $5,000 uh now we took some of that from our building fund and uh and we've we've kind of borrowed from different areas but we are we're facing a a bit of a a dilemma and so we talked about it this past week on our board meeting and it was brought up suggested that we make the appeal to the congregation I know just clearly from Reading scripture that God tells us that if someone has the gift of giving they ought to give in proportion to what what God the way God has blessed them and so next Sunday we're going to take a special offering to try to help fill the gaps with some of these needs and if you're able to I want to encourage you uh to give in that offering my wife and I will be giving um and and I pray the Lord will help us to be generous in in that as well and direct us but um I want to I want to just make that appeal to us as as a congregation is that is that okay to make that feel I'm good so we're going to do that next Sunday and again we you know we budget we you know we do what we need to do and we try to live within that budget as as I encourage everybody else to do we don't live beyond our means but some of these things they just kind of creep up and so we're it's just been a tough year and I know it's been tough on everybody but uh make that special appeal for for next Sunday so be prepared for that if you'd like to give before that you can give online you can stop by the church office uh whatever God God is a god of Miracles and he he uh even when I worry he he always comes through there have been time time after time that he's provided I've worried needlessly and he's just you know he's he's right on time he's never he's never too early and he's never too late he's exactly when when it's his time so amen well we're going to continue on with our series we began last week entitled Divine Direction Divine Direction and um this week is going to be a little bit more of some practical steps and the next week I'm excited I'll get into some spiritual aspects about it I'm excited about next week's message dealing with those moments where we feel the holy spirit's prompting to do something you ever have those moments um so the Practical and the spiritual work together we make we make plans we we we follow the guidance of scripture but there are times when the Holy Spirit might speak to us direct us to do something and we've got to learn to obey the spirit's prompting so just out of curiosity I wonder in this room how many of you have a hard time making decisions hard time making decisions all right not too many of you how about like at at restaurants how many of you have a hard time deciding what to eat at a restaurant I there's a few of you you're like well in my family I am known as the most indecisive one around the table we might we go to and listen I'm a creature of habit if if there's something that I like at a particular restaurant I'm going to keep ordering it because I'm afraid to order something different and and I and I and I don't like it um I remember several years ago going out with some friends where we were at a national uh youth convention and general Council and it was in Orlando and we decided to go out for a steak and uh we went to this this place uh just south of Orlando and um and I had one of the best Stakes I had ever had in my life and I'm a ribeye kind of guy and so I had the most I had the perfect ribey well the next year we went back and I told my wife um we're going to that Steakhouse again and we went and I accidentally ordered a sirloin I know I was so disappointed I said where's all the fat right like what is wrong with I was so disappointed but uh regularly I I usually order the same things but I I'm still very indecisive they'll come and they'll look to me first would you like to order I'm usually but why don't you check with everybody else when we come back around and I've been known from time to time after ordering calling the waiter or waitress back and changing my order back to what I originally it's just how I am I'm I'm sorry I'm now when it comes to major life decisions I like to think that I'm a little bit better at that uh following the Lord's Direction but when it comes to choosing what I'm going to eat at a restaurant I just I absolutely freeze um and I end up you know ordering the same thing um I I believe that it's safe to say that most of us in this room no matter what stage you're at we all want to know what God's will is or God's direction or what God is leading us to do in this next stage of life right um and sometimes sometimes not knowing how to make that decision can cause fear in our lives and really us from doing anything at all uh we we choose not to make the wrong decision but today hopefully I'll disarm that a little bit by giving us some practical advice on on what we uh what we can do to make good Godly decisions so last week we learned about what God cares about most when it comes to his Direction and figuring out his will in our lives and I want to recap it for those of you who were not here um but also for those of you who were here and maybe don't pay attention as well as you should number one is this God cares about who we are more than what we do he cares about who we are I remember for the longest time this being so crippling I felt a call into Ministry I didn't know what that looked like I you know I've joked in the past about uh some of the pastors that I had in my life and and uh uh one of the first pastors I met was with my grandfather we went to a little church uh in Coney Island New York little storefront church and I'd go in there with my grandfather he was a he was a a lay leader in the church and uh Pastor would invite us back into his uh into the kitchen area there's just off of the staff area and he'd give me cookies and milk usually on a Sunday morning and I just my first memory was if being a pastor means you get cookies and milk every Sunday then sign me up right I'll do it uh but I you know I wasn't quite sure uh what to do I I wasn't sure where to go to school and for a little while it really crippled me um I I had this sense that that God was calling me to go to Bible College in my teen years uh after I graduated high school I all through high school I worked for a butcher and then After High School uh he offered me a partnership and so at you know 18 years old I my par with my parents full support I was about ready to buy into this business and be a butcher I thought I love steak right I love Burgers so why not I mean you just get it free cut it right off the slab it and I take it home and then I just had this moment like could I see myself doing this for the rest of my life and that fear just gripped me and I ended up leaving that job I went to work for my father uh who worked uh in the trucking industry for many years he was a doc supervisor and uh I got a great job about uh 18 19 years old uh back so that would have been 19 8889 and I was making over 20 bucks an hour I was banking some money I was living in my parents' home my dad barely asked for any room in board and so I was making a lot of money but I was working third shift and I remember about 6 months into it about 3:00 in the morning thinking to myself do I want to do this for the rest of my life and then I I made a decision to leave there I went on to work at the state capital in Harrisburg Pennsylvania uh worked for the Republican uh Republican party the Appropriations committee and I was uh and I was beginning to you know decide whether or not I wanted to go to school there was a there was a a scholarship that they gave to students who wanted to uh further their education I thought well maybe this is something that I want to do and uh remember the head of the Appropriations Committee uh giving me an honest talk and uh and laying out what what politics really looks like and I thought I don't know if I want to do this for the rest of my life and then long story short the Lord led me to go off to Bible College and even that decision was just so hard what school should I choose and I I I got to be honest with you I wrestled with that fear and it just really really gripped me but then I came to the realization that who I was becoming as a young man and as a man of God was far more important to God than what I was doing did I still sense God's call on my life for full-time Min Ministry yes but what God was doing in my life and the journey and the process he was taking me on was far more important than the actual profession that I that I chose God cares about who we who we are more than what we do first Thessalonians 4:3 God's will is for you to be holy you want to know what God's will is for your life it's to be holy it's to live a life separate unto God Colossians 3:23 whatever you do whatever you do work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord not for human Masters whatever you do whatever you find yourself doing maybe you feel like well I'm just a stay-at-home parent right now it's not what I Envision my life to be whatever you do do it is unto the Lord maybe you're in a minimum wage job or a low paying job and this is not what you had expected listen whatever you are doing do it as unto the Lord not working for human beings but working for your lord maybe it's not your dream job maybe this is not what you envisioned your career to be like whatever it is that you're doing do it as unto the Lord God will be pleased I jokingly said last week maybe your boss is a real jerk well work as if you're working for the Lord honor the Lord in all that you do and if you're that jerk boss it's time to stop being that it's time to start caring for those that the Lord has entrusted to your care right secondly God cares about the why before the what cares about our heart he cares about our motive Proverbs 16:2 says people may be pure in their own eyes but the Lord examines their motives the Lord examines their motives God cares about that you can't get to the right place when you start with the wrong motives can't get there Galatians 1:10 says Apostle Paul puts it this way am I now trying to win the approval of human beings or of God am I trying to please people if I were still trying to please people I would not be a servant of Christ so God cares about the why he knows the heart he knows why we do what we do and he knows the pressure we feel to impress others but do it for him work for him so this week what I want to unpack for you is divine direction making decisions just a blueprint from scripture on making good decisions okay so you ready for it all right I hope so many people I believe struggle with any decisions as I shared earlier due to fear of failure they feel like if I make the wrong decision I'm going to fail and what what ends up happening is they make no decision at all and people miss out on God's best for their life on on God's direction for their life the problem is is in our society especially now it's even more heightened with social media is the illusion of God's perfect will the illusion of the perfect life or the illusion of this family has it all together they have the perfect vacations they have the perfect family gatherings they have the perfect meals they live in the perfect house it is this illusion of perfection that has gripped people from making good decisions they're afraid to be imperfect or to make mistakes but I want to let you know today the Bible is full of illustrations of individuals who were on the right track but just simply made a mistake come on you following me I don't need to list them I don't think right you don't need to get swallowed by a large fish to realize you made a mistake there are so many individuals that were on the right track and they made a mistake and yet God is a redeeming God and brought them back where things EX exactly the way they were when they made their mistake not always but just trust in the fact that when you're walking with the Lord there's room for mistakes how many of you made a mistake this week all right okay so there's room for mistakes nobody is going to be perfect we've led to believe that God will clearly show us exactly what to do listen I think if God were to lay out his full plan from like the moment moment you know you graduated high school till if maybe if you're older now till when you retired and he laid out his full plan and said this is the journey I'm going to take you on this is going to happen here and this is going to happen there and that I don't think I don't think many of us in this room would sign up for that journey I know those of you who've been married for 50 or 60 years when you you know you post things on your anniversary and um and you say you know I married my sweetheart and we're celebrating 50 years and I do it all again right really in the back of your mind you're saying I'll do it all again with that person but I'd really like to learn from some of the mistakes we made along the way and tweak things here and there right so listen God doesn't unveil his plan for us like everything all at once he doesn't lay it out there for us and say this is this is everything that you're going to do the path is not always going to be smooth there will be problems there will be resistance and there will be struggles not all of the Apostles Paul the Apostle Paul's life was like an acts 9 moment you know that story in act 9 where he's on his way to Damascus um to um to persecute Jews to arrest them right and and he has an encounter with the Lord and the Lord speaks directly to him and tells him that he's to go uh to to this certain man's house right and and and the Lord even laid it on that man anas's heart as well this is going to happen he argued with the Lord of course but you know not not all of Paul's life was like that moment where the Lord said I'm going to lay out every little detail this is exactly what you're going to do step by step life just simply doesn't work that way God has has given us the Bible tells us God's given us everything that we need to live a life of godliness right and so he's going to give us the tools to be able to do that most of his journey was more like this look at the scripture in 1 Corinthians 16 Paul writes this he says I'm coming to visit you after I've been in Macedonia for I am planning to travel through Macedonia perhaps I will stay a while with you possibly all winter and then you can send me on my way to the to my next destination this time I don't want you to make just I don't want to make just a short visit and then go right on right I don't want to do that I I want to come and I want to stay a while if the Lord will let me in the meantime I'll be staying here in Ephesus until the Festival of Pentecost there's a wide open door for great work here although many oppose me do you do you sense a little bit of uncertainty in Paul's speech there and not uncertainty as in uncertain with God's plan he just realizes that things may change and things may shift a little bit right he says well I'm planning on traveling to you and and I plan on staying for a little while but who knows I mean right now I'm in Ephesus and and I'm planning on staying here for a little while but things could go sour for me and guess what they did right and he had to get out of town sometimes we ask God tell me exactly what to do but what he really wants is to give us the wisdom to make the decision doesn't that make a little bit more sense to us I mean he could tell us exactly what to do and we could just dumb it down and blindly obey because after all he is God but God wants to give us the wisdom to make the decision and the faith to walk the journey that's how God works when Solomon became king he didn't ask for wealth or riches or honor or a long life or death to all of his enemies what did he ask for wisdom to rule prbs 4:7 getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do I love that verse probably one of my more favorite Proverbs getting wisdom is the wisest thing to do and whatever else you do develop good judgment thank God through time through my journey through years of serving the lord I got a little bit more wisdom and a little bit more judgment aren't you thankful for that aren't you you thankful that God did that in your life we've all said this if I if I knew then what I know now right well that's the direction God wants to take us on so directional wisdom we go number one is this walk just walk walk with the Lord walk just take the steps and begin the journey with him some people wait until they they get you know God's call or God's direction I've encountered so many people in Ministry that they they uh share with me that they've had the sense of God's call on their life to do ministry and they don't know what to do with it and so they end up not doing anything at all and really the Journey Begins with just doing whatever you can now uh I remember when I first went to Bible College um our school did something called the helps Ministry and they would um put students in teams and send them out to area churches some were right there and uh close by others had to travel a couple hours even on a Sunday to go and minister in there in church and so I went with a a small team about four or five students some of my friends and I showed up the church and I just you know I thought you know I just started Bible College surely I could do something like I you wasn't quite sure if I was ready to preach but I could at least teach a Sunday school class or you know something you know something big like that right and so I just went to the pastor and said listen I I am willing to do whatever you need me to do I just want to serve the Lord and he said brother John I I've got just the job for you I'm like thank you I'm ready for him to hand me a Sunday school book or you know whatever uh ask me to be part of some other you know the worship team or what whatever it might be um and so he said uh just see me right after service I'm like all right all right this is exciting I had a great service I worshiped the Lord like I had never worshiped the Lord before everybody was leaving and I'm just waiting for my instructions and he came over to me uh with a pale and a toilet scrubber and um and other cleaning supplies and he said brother John the Lord laid it on my heart that you're to clean the bathrooms every Sunday after church and I said okay and that's where my Ministry began cleaning bathrooms in an American Legion that they rented out after service each and every week and by the time I was done cleaning the bathrooms everybody was gone and I had a walk what felt like 10 miles to the pastor's house after service for lunch it was really only about an e or a quarter of a mile but it felt like that right and so one Sunday after about 3 weeks his wife said to him you know Jim where's where's John oh John is at the church I'm teaching him a lesson and he's like she's like you're doing what oh he you know he's explained the whole thing he's cleaning the toilet she said you get in that car and you go pick him up right now and you give him another job somebody else can clean toilets and so that's where Ministry began but you got to walk you got to just do that Proverbs 13:20 says walk with the wise and become wise for a companion of fools suffers harm one of the first things that I had to lesson uh that I the first lesson that I had to learn in in life when I as a teenager when I first began to serve the Lord and I wanted to live right for the Lord really turns out that my my mama was right mom if you're listening thank you for the advice you were right you know the old saying show me your friends and I'll show you your future right yeah Mom told me time and time again I don't like that boy that you're hanging out with I don't like that girl who's showing interest in you right and was when I listened I realized she was right but here's the thing it's almost impossible to live the right life when you have the wrong friends it's almost impossible to live the right life when you have the wrong friends who's in your circle who's walking with you maybe that needs to change or maybe you need to be the one to affect change in that circle of friends like guys we can't do this anymore we can't talk this way anymore we can't we can't do the kind of things that we've been doing if you walk with those types of people it'll always lead you astray The Godly give good advice to their friends the wicked lead them astray and I've had many friends in my life who have led me astray so we have to be careful about who we walk with and then secondly we just simply have to walk we have to take that first step Newton's law of motion tells us this an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion at the at a constant speed and direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force so an act an object that's not in motion is not going to not to go into motion by itself it it has to be propelled into motion you have to make the decision that I'm going to move I'm going to do something I'm going to walk with the Lord the Bible uh tells us a lot about walking with the Lord let me just share a few of these verses Deuteronomy 30 and verse 16 for I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep his commands his decrees and regulations by walking in his ways we've got to walk in his ways Micah 68 I love this verse he has shown you oh mortal what is good what does the Lord require of you to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God this action of walking and then one in the New Testament Ephesians chapter 4 always be humble and gentle be patient with each other making all allowance for each other's faults because of your love make every effort to keep yourself United in the spirit binding yourself together with peace walking with one another journeying together being patient with one another being patient when others make mistakes don't be so quick to write other people off because you don't want them to do that to you do you want to know what God's direction is in your life then just start walking with him right now start the journey right now the second step is to ask is to ask James 1 five familiar verse if any of you lacks wisdom you should ask your neighbor nope you should ask God if any of you lacks wisdom you should ask that buddy at work if any of you ask ask lacks wisdom you should ask your circle of friends at school who may or may not be Christ followers you should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault ask the Lord for guidance that's the first step for the Lord says I will guide you along the best Pathways for your life I will advise you I will watch over you when you ask the Lord he'll give you that direction the verse again says the Lord says I'll when you ask I'll guide you I'll guide you I'll give you the direction I'll give you the step I'll watch over your your pathways I'll advise you you need some good counsel ask me I'll I'll give it to you and I'll watch over you I was really trying to load this video and if you search for it on Jennifer's Facebook page it's it's on there um for those of you who don't know my son my my youngest son Isaac who's in the back Isaac where you at back there working the computer all right um he just got his permit and so I was just thinking about this I was thinking about man how how quickly those stages go I remember vividly now so Isaac's our our youngest and I've had the privilege um of not only teaching all of my children how to ride a bicycle but teaching all of them how to drive a car as well and um and so that's been that's been my assignment and I remember like it was yesterday when we lived right outside of Morgantown West Virginia on the Rails to Trails taking Isaac out there and the video that Jen had on her Facebook that I was really trying to show you the morning was of us taking Isaac out there and riding with his training wheels and Jen said in the video Isaac buddy you're doing so good we're about ready to take your training wheels off well within a matter of a couple of weeks I did and he just quickly you know I did the old dad thing walked alongside of him ran alongside him had my hand on it you know I may or may not have dropped him a couple of times but um anyway did my best to to walk with him to guide him to be there along with him right and uh and then just more Rec recently um teaching him how how to drive first we started with an automatic and then his first vehicle that he worked hard um to to buy is a small pickup truck with a manual transmission and so U we to I took him out took him over to the high school and we went up and down the hills and he learned very quickly like in an afternoon how to how to start and stop on a hill and all that kind of stuff and now he's he's on his way and uh and uh good Lord in about less than a year he'll be driving out of the driveway by himself right but uh the thing is is that as a dad I know that I'm I try to be there for my kids to guide them to direct them to give to advise them to walk alongside of them and that's really the picture that we get from this with God is to ask the Lord now this could not be understated uh really um at all can't can't be overstated enough and that's this the next part of asking is ask others for counseling but ask Believers solid Believers ask a pastor or a spiritual leader or Mentor in your life right ask them for Good Counsel Bible tells us in Proverbs 15:22 and my wife and I have lived by this verse in every every major decision that we've made plans fail for lack of counsel but with many advisors they succeed there have been a few moments in life in our transition in Ministry where we were uncertain as to what to do and I I asked leaders that were in our life to speak into our life to give us some wisdom to give us Direction I remember a pivotal moment um pivotal moment uh in our life uh we were transitioning and I just thought about it because I saw Josiah tville over here um Josiah just wait for everybody so see who you are his grandfather was my superintendent uh Pastor over all the Pastors in the Pennsylvania Delaware district and I remember going to him when we felt the Lord stirring our hearts to leave our first lead pastorate a small little town in Pennsylvania called Central City which is neither Central nor a city thank you those of you and so um we were we were leaving there and I I just was wrestling with it so much we developed so many wonderful relationships my wife just did an incredible job as our youth pastor uh we saw that youth group grow to I mean it's probably 60 to 70 kids in in a community that graduated 35 um on on a Wednesday night I remember one graduation after being there about six years look seeing students walk across the platform and we both remarked every single one of those students came to our church and came to our youth group at one point or another and some of them still do right and it was just a powerful time and I just I wrestled with it so much it was a small community and it was tough it was really really tough I had to work a lot of hours outside the church just to make ends meet but it was just such wonderful a wonderful season of Ministry for us and for our family and I and I sat down with with now Dr tville and said I'm really wrestling with his decision I feel like if we leave this is going to happen and this is going to happen and these new families that just came into the church they're going to leave and they're going to you know whatever and um and he just looked at me and he said John I mean no disrespect you and your wife are doing a wonderful job um in fact he's the one who called me to move on to our next place of ministry and gave me that advice but he said John listen Central City was there long before you and it'll be there long after you until the Lord returns or he has other plans and I went okay so it's not about me it's not about me at all it's about the Lord and God is still doing wonderful things in that Community they still have their struggles right so ask for Godly counsel I think it's probably more spiritual to ask for Godly counsel and to sit down with maybe maybe your spouse or whoever parents or whatever it might be and make a pros and cons list by some of the advice that you were given I think it's more spiritual to look at that and say okay God this is what I fa to do these are the pros these are the cons I I really need your direction okay and then we'll get to the last step in in just a moment there are times God will make it very very clear and other times he's just asking for us to take a step of faith and to just do it to step out there the last bit of counsel I can give you on asking is stop asking God for a sign stop asking God for a sign I and I speak from experience might say well isn't it in the Bible didn't people do that in the Bible but when people did it in the Bible listen it wasn't an Act of Faith it was an act of fear or doubt later they had their Shining Moments of Faith but at first it was not always I I immediately think about Gideon but before I get that uh get there once in a while we ask for a sign and God will give us a clear sign you ever have that it's not his preferred method please it's not his preferred method how many of you remember those Billboards right that would have a message and then at the end it would say God right I think I have a couple of them right here some of my favorites there we go well you did ask for a sign right God right you driving down the highway the next one is this we really need to talk right God and just to add this one I think the third one right here that love your neighbor that love thy neighbor thing I really meant it God so if you're looking for a sign there there are there are signs out there right but it's not the preferred method I think about Gideon in the Bible if you don't know his story uh it's in Judges chapter 6 is a big bulk of that story um Gideon he's briefly mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11 along with Barack and Samson and David and Samuel and then it goes on um in in verses 32 to39 of Hebrews chapter 11 you know the faith chapter to talk about their exploits but not as detailed as some of the previous mentioned ones well Gideon he was he was a man of Faith uh but unfortunately he was best known for his moment of doubt that led to him asking God for a sign I mean of all the things that he did the steps of faith that he took he's probably more well known for him asking God for a sign so what happened was Israel disobeyed God they were punished the midianites controlled them they repented and then God raised up another judge in the form of Gideon to um to deliver them right and so first an angel of the Lord appears to Gideon he doesn't realize it's an angel of the Lord and and he and the and the individual tells him that God's chosen you to lead Israel to Victory Gideon protests he's like I'm the least of my clan my clan is even the least of all the Clans right I can't do this and then he asks for a sign God not only gives him not one two but four signs four signs first of all the first two and he didn't realize this until after the fact that God sends him an angel he tells him prepare a meal puts it on a rock right the the the man reaches out with his stick and fire comes from it uh from the stone after he points the stick at it and consumes the sacrifice and then all of a sudden Gideon realizes this is an angel the journey continues on and and the Lord says I'm going to use you to conquer the minites you know the whole story his his uh his army goes from 3,000 down to 300 Gideon's 300 men are supposed to go out and fight this enormous Army and and just before that as God speaking to Gideon Gideon's like all right I believe God but give me another sign right he says I'm going to put this wool fleece out on the ground tonight and if I wake up in the morning and the ground is dry but the fleece is wet then I know the Lord is with me right and so what happens exactly that and then if that wasn't enough he prays again all right Lord please don't smite me but I'm going to ask for one more sign right one more sign I'm going to put the wol fleece on the ground and if the ground around it is wet and the fleece is dry then I know this would be the fourth sign but then I know that the Lord is with me well the Lord was patient with him but the reality is is that the story of of Gideon teaches us about faith not how to seek God for a sign and so stop asking God for a sign God would prefer a a a much better way how about by impress pressing us in our spirit how about speaking to us through our own devotional time how about asking the Lord how about seeking the guidance of other people stop asking God for a sign number three the last thing is this decide decide decide to take a step make a decision now I don't want to sound unspiritual but if you know me my now I use Sports and sometimes movies as illustration and I'm going to quote a great prophet of his day Mr Miyagi as he's sitting down with Daniel trying to teach Jan Daniel asks him for help in learning karate because he was getting beat up beaten up in school and he teaches him this lesson karate karate you learn karate so you don't have to fight so Daniel's conflicted about this and he said Daniel son we must talk right walk on road walk on right side safe walk on left side safe walk in the middle sooner or later get squished just like grape you don't remember anything else from this message just you know I'm kidding please I hope that's not all you remember but if it triggers your brain to help you to remember the message then I did my job the reality is you keep walking in the middle of the road without Mak making a decision sooner or later you're going to get squished that's it you've got to make a decision you've got to decide you've got to uh decide to move forward so you move you walk with the Lord you begin your journey God I don't know what it is that you're calling me to do but I'm going to at least take the steps of action to do it I'm going to begin to move I'm going to ask you I'm going to call upon you I'm going to seek you God and I'm going to be diligent about it I'm going to be in the word I'm going to let the Holy Spirit speak to me I'll sit quietly before the Lord and let and let the Holy Spirit speak to me as I've prayed and I've been in the word and I've written some things down in my journal I'm going to let you speak to me and then I'm going to ask others for some Godly advice I'm going to go to some people and say I've been praying about this and this is what the Lord laid on my heart to do and I and I feel like I I'm I have to make a decision what what do you think and make sure that they are Godly individuals that they have been proven to make good decis decisions in their life not all the time but for the most most of the time right a spiritual Mentor a pastor a leader somebody maybe somebody who leads your life group or or whatever it might be that's why life groups are so important there's so many layers to to life groups that that I think um we we haven't yet even even touched and that is the relationship that we have with one another to be able to ask one another their advice their experiences and then what it comes down to is you have to decide now listen to me where there is no moral command God gives you wisdom to choose but where there is a moral command because I've said this before and people have used it for their own purposes um in particularly perhaps divorce even might say well I have to decide things are not going well and and I need to make a decision you know if if if there is not biblical grounds for divorce then the decision has been made the New Testament talks a lot about remaining faithful now in the I'll say this again because it's it's important to say this where there is abuse in the home you always need to seek out help don't take that seek out help from your pastors seek out help from from leaders in the community seek out authorities what whatever it might be that's that's never good not saying get divorced but I'm saying that needs to stop so you need to find help that way but where there's no moral command God gives you the wisdom to choose to love and to trust him and then you just simply need to decide Paul didn't say thus sayith the Lord very often in fact another verse 1 Thessalonians chapter 3:1 finally when we could stand it no longer we decided to stay alone in Athens the NIV puts it this way we thought it best we thought it best he didn't say after a long night of prayer the Lord came to me in a vision and said to do this did that happen to the Apostle Paul to Peter to some of the other disciples it certainly did usually when they were about ready to make the wrong decision then the Lord came to them but for the most part they were equipped to make the decision and they learned over time the direction of the holy spirit because if you remember from our last series God is a God who opens and closes doors no man can close a door that God opens right and no man can open a door that God closes we have to decide we have to make the decision and we have to take a step of Faith sometimes you might make a mistake and you know what you know what we learn from mistakes we learn wisdom we learn wisdom you've heard it said before the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different results we make mistakes in near nearly 30 years of full-time Ministry Jen and I have only had three major Transitions and in two of those S situations I almost said no to the in invitation out of fear but God stepped in God helped me even when we make the wrong decisions we learn wisdom God can correct those things I realize my God is with me even when I don't get it right he will make make my paths straight Psalm 32:8 the Lord says again I will guide you along the best pathway of your life I will advise you I will watch over you I want to invite our worship team to come remember from our first message God cares far more about who we are becoming more than what we're doing and I think this journey this decision-making process the times we get it right and the times we get it wrong these are all valuable lessons that we learn in our spiritual growth process SW I believe so firmly that God is more concerned about what develops in our life through these decisions right and wrong than by always getting it right we learn we grow we grow in wisdom we gain experience listen I could be the best pastor I could be the most prolific speaker but if I don't love my wife the way the Bible tells me to love my wife and if I don't raise and treat my children the way the Bible tells me to raise and treat my children then God's not pleased you could be successful in school in athletics in your career in your business but if you're not a person of Integrity you're not honoring God and you're not faithful to God God is not pleased nor is he impressed by your exploits God is far more concerned about what's developing in our lives than who we are or what we're doing so let me recap directional wisdom is this walk with the Lord every day maybe there are people that are walking along with you that right now they they can't be along this journey you've got to make some changes in your circle of friends and your circle of influence walk with the Lord take time spend time with the Lord spend time in his word spend time in prayer spend time just sitting and listening [Music] secondly ask for guidance scriptures Bible's full of scriptures that talk about asking the Lord for guidance seeking the Lord knocking Jesus said ask seek a knock right all of these illustrations ask for his guidance find a mentor find somebody who can come along that spiritual journey with you maybe you're here in this room and you're marriage is struggling find a couple perhaps a couple that have been through a similar situation and God has God has brought them through or brought them through the other side is everything perfect no by no means but they've walked that Journey already they've learned some lessons they've learned what to do what not to do ask some good counsel and then thirdly decide to take a step and you know what many many times it is a step of Faith this is what I feel the Lord telling me to do this is what I feel the Lord leading me to do I just simply have to take that step and do it I want to invite you to stand and I going to invite our prayer team to come forward it's what I want to do today every Journey Begins with one step and maybe for you today that one step is just simply making a decision to surrender everything to the Lord Jesus Christ maybe you're here in this room and you've not even begun a journey you've not even begun a relationship with Jesus Bible tells us that all of us have sinned and fall short of God's glorious standards but the gift of God is etal eternal life through Jesus Christ that if we believe in our heart that Jesus is God's son that he died on the cross was resurrected again and now sits at the right hand of the father if we believe that in our heart we confess that with our mouth the Bible says you will be saved so maybe your journey today begins with saying yes to Jesus Christ maybe you're here in this room and that's you we want to pray with you we want to make sure that you make that DEC decision you are given an opportunity to make that decision perhaps in you're room you're in the room today and you're facing difficulties you're not necessarily wondering what the next step is on your journey you're just wondering how you're going to get through this step this part of the journey because it's been very very difficult well it begins with prayer begins with you can take you can knock out a couple of steps right here asking the Lord asking others to to join you in prayer and inviting him into the situation and believing God for that so what our prayer team does each and every week is not only pray over physical needs we believe in healing the Bible teaches us about anointing people with oil and praying the prayer of faith we believe that God can do that but also partnering with you to pray over a specific need or situation that's going on in your life so we invite you in just a moment to step out as the team worship team will lead us in this closing song to receive prayer whether it's a decision that you're going to make to follow Christ or a need that you have in your life a physical need or you just need the Lord's help your Lord's strength to make it through this leg of the journey but I want to close by praying for all of us today that God will begin to help us to either to either learn or recapture these steps on how to make a Godly decision a good decision father thank you so much for your word your word is truth we believe that the Bible that we hold in our hands is your authoritative word that it is perfect without fault and that God it contains your story of your interaction with us and throughout the pages of scripture there there are many narratives of you giving individuals Direction and wisdom there are narratives of individuals who knew the right path to be on but somehow got off that path and made a mistake and when they were repented you brought them back and you you brought them into uh A New Path A New Journey you redeemed them and so Lord help us to learn from these situ ations we ask you to give us wisdom we ask you to guide us and direct us speak to us in our own personal time as we're praying and we're asking for direction and we open up the word of God your direction is right there help us to seek Godly counsel help us to ask others mentors spiritual leaders in our lives to help us to give us advice and then help us to take that step of Faith to do what it is you're telling us to do in the name of Jesus we pray amen as the team closes Us in worship today I want to invite you to step out from your seats if you need prayer today our prayer team is here come forward and receive that [Music] prayer letting go of every single dream I lay each one down at your feet every moment of my wondering never changes what you [Music] see tried to win this War I confess my hands are we I need your rest
