  • ASEAN is a foundational organization in Southeast Asia.
  • Original members: Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia (Founded on August 8, 1967).

  • Objective: Promote understanding and cooperation among member states.

ASEAN Studies

  • Focus on individual and collective components of ASEAN.
  • Each member country is independent and cannot dictate actions of others.
  • Principle of non-interference in internal issues (e.g., military coup in Myanmar).

    • Requirement to memorize and perform the ASEAN hymn.

    • Challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • Disparities in pandemic responses among member states.
    • Issues with migrant workers and rights, terrorism, and ethnic conflicts (e.g., Rohingyas).

Course Structure

  • Three Parts of Discussion:
    1. Unpacking ASEAN
      • History of ASEAN and its charter.
      • Theoretical perspectives on ASEAN integration.
    2. Comparative Analysis
      • Comparison of member states' unique features.
      • Diversity in religion and culture among ASEAN countries.
    3. Contemporary Issues and Challenges
      • Examination of current risks and opportunities in ASEAN integration.

Grading System

  • New grading system implemented due to pandemic:
    • 60% class standing (activities submitted in Google Classroom).
    • 40% major outputs (no midterm exams).

Class Expectations

  • Importance of timely submission of requirements.
  • Scheduled international speakers from Thailand to share insights about their country.
  • Recordings of synchronous sessions will be uploaded for review.
  • Encourage active participation and question-asking during sessions.

Communication Guidelines

  • Queries should be posted during office hours (8 AM - 5 PM).
  • Recordings of lectures will be provided for students who miss class.
