First Day at Microsoft: Experiences and Insights

It's as they say - "If you wish for something from heart, the whole world tries to fulfil your wish!" So after 4 years of rejection, failures and consistent efforts, I finally made it! So this is the map of Microsoft campus. It's like a complete city. World's first X-Box. So impressive. I can play Minecraft in such a big screen. Or any other game. So, a very good morning everyone. Today is the day. The day I was waiting for ever since I completed my college degree. The 4 years of hardwork that I did for the day I wanted to see is today. So excited! I used to live close to Microsoft office where you met my landlord but I never got to see it. But, now, today is the day! And for lunch today I am taking Paya. So this is something Katie made Thank you Katie. Yeah, you are welcome. Are you excited? Yes! Very excited! - You ready to go?

  • Yes! Okay.. Have you heard the expression - "First impression is the last impression."? No.. But, I think that's a really cool expression. I think that there's lot of truth to it. I grew up hearing an expression that's not as powerful I think.. "You only get one chance to make a first impression." Like, you only have one first impression or something like that. But I like that. That's like a lot more dramatic. Awesome! Going to office daily by the cycle is very very challenging. Because it's around 3-4 miles. That is around 6-7 kilometres away from my house. So I will be very sweaty if I go by my bike. So I am waiting to get my e-bike so that I can travel in cycle as well. So that's parking for charging and that's clean vehicle. Since the car is 73% charged today, so I'll just go for green vehicle parking. And this office was opened in May so I am one of the first few thousand employees to see it. And these all drinks are for free. So I am gonna have my orange juice. So the cafeteria is really nice but there's special food on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. And for lunch today, we are at the rooftop or terrace. Oh, you didn't start? Thank you. We are moving desks. So finally this is my desk. The first desk was not actually my desk. Now I have to setup my desktop with the display port or display to Type-C port I think two cables for two monitors. and also I have to setup my laptop. And this location is surrounded by amazing restaurants so I just picked up food for Katie. So finally time to do some unboxing. And as you all know, I am a mobile app developer, Android and iOS developer.. so Android as well as iPad stuff. I am getting both things together. So first of all we will be unboxing Android because I am an Android developer mainly so.. Pixel 6 which I got brand new that will be used for testing some Android apps and after that there's an iPad. So this will be used to deploy or build some iOS apps which I am very excited for. So this is iPad 8th generation. This is also brand new. So.. And then this is actually iPad 9th generation! Sorry! I am wrong. 9th generation Generations go so fast... iPad 9th generation and then.. next our laptop- so this is Lenovo Yoga laptop which is very cool. Let me explore all the features for you. So let me show you all So first of all it is Windows 11 powered Yoga laptop. It is so cool because it's called Yoga. So that means it can actually bent down to here also to here to become a tablet. So basically in my meetings I can draw as well. You might think I will be drawing with my hand. No. I will be drawing with a pen. So basically on this side there's a pen which comes out as well. So with this pen... It has 2 buttons. One - to write and one to erase. So I think one to erase and one to write. You can switch around. So let's unlock. I need to use keyboard again. .. For password. Okay. So unlock Unlocked. Now I'm gonna open One Note app. It is one of the most used apps here for notes. So let's create a new note. So honestly, it's an amazing experience coding and drawing on this laptop. Laptop is around 14 inch so not that big and not too small because I have to carry so many so many things in my backpack. So it won't be much heavy. You might be thinking how I will be building the iOS apps. For that we have Mac mini right here. So Mac Mini or I can also request for MacBook if needed if in future I need to do more iOS development I can ask for it. But for temporary use I can use Mac Mini and also the iPad to test and run some apps. So it's gonna be very exciting and my backpack won't be very heavy. So this is I think.. only like.. 1-2 kgs. And.. I won't carry the boxes. I need to buy some cases for iPad so that they don't get scratches. I don't want to spoil Microsoft hardware. So... just gonna make sure. But otherwise I'm really really excited. And this docking station is so so amazing With just one port both the monitors get connected immediately. Almost immediately! And by the way, meet some of my teammates. Hi, do you wanna introduce? Yeah, my name is Ahmad Dawudi. I just started Microsoft - And... Joseph. So how difficult was it for you to make it to Microsoft? Honestly it's the preparation that got into it. Really made it tough.. A year and a half of leetcoding.. Easy, medium and hard questions. Multiple rounds of interviews.. I think after 4 tries, on my 5th one I was finally able to land a job here on Microsoft. So I would say it was really difficult. But I learnt a lot. Awesome. I also had 4 rejections. And how about you? Umm... yeah, I also had like- uh a few rejections along the way but yeah preparing for those like- even though I got rejected for those.. that definitely- like.. that's really good practice I think without the rejections I wouldn't have made in here. Totally. Thank you so much! It was an amazing day! I had so much fun. Today I got to experience the X-Box gaming room all the hardware and most importantly made some friends talked to some colleagues I didn't introduce everyone to you but slowly and gradually as I get to know them better Talked to the HR about benefits because working at Microsoft and the benefits are so amazing for example... you get health insurance for free. It's just mindblowing and most importantly, recession is going on. Hiring freeze. But even then, Microsoft is not cutting down on the perks you would get. You will get the perks as usual. So excited to be at Microsoft.
