good day jet subscribers this is serge ralt of jeju media your learning resource partner if you are new to this channel don't forget to subscribe hit the notification button comment like and share good day and welcome to serge ralt's video lesson let's talk about observing grammar in making definitions this is for english 10 4th quarter module number four this is an english lesson with sir draw so stay tuned i would like to present to you this two pictures i believe that there are things that you probably think misunderstood by many or whenever these will be presented to others they may think there are things that are wrong and you are true you're correct who are you who it's going to be confusing especially if you're a grammar nazi listed grandpa now grammar doesn't only speak about words it has something to do with punctuation and correct punctuation can save a person's life [Music] i believe you've seen errors or you've seen mistakes in this pictures but grammar is not a set of rules it is something inherent in the language and language cannot exist without it it can be discovered but not invented thank you to charlton laird for providing this code if you have comments about this quotation you may comment to formally start our lesson let's try to check our targets you are expected to our students to understand how various subjects agree with their verbs in english construct grammatical sentences in relation to subject-verb agreement and proofread paragraphs using the correct agreement and its subject and its verb i know that you're familiar with subject-verb agreement so let's refresh ourselves let's try i want you to complete the following sentences with the correct form of the verb by choosing your answers from the choices number one you may take note of them either my sister or my brother blank my math textbook choose your answer and we will check later number two neither the boys or mary blank planning to go for a vacation what's your answer number three what should the following is correct using your prior knowledge what about number four which of the following also is correct choose your answer check the spelling the grammar the verbs to be used and did you get it right number one either my sister or my brother has my textbook number two is planning we will explain later on why these are the answers you will be able to check during our discussion every one of the streets has a green color every one is our subject either cassie or mary pays the employees this afternoon the nearest subject is mary [Music] next let's start with our discussion we will have the correct grammar in making definitions how do we make it and how do these grammars make definition why are they important let's start with the concept of pattern pattern is an arrangement that reveals or suggests a design it is a framework of an appearance the study of language is a long history although language science or linguistics as we know it came into being only in the last century and they have so when we talk about subject-verb agreement i know that most of you or most of our students know this already the basic idea behind sentence agreement is simple all the parts of your sentence should match or agree we have to agree with the subject plus the verb to be used in our sentences when we have correct grammar that adds to the meaning of our sentence may it be through verbal or may it be through written now let's have rule number one we will just be discussing the basic rules a verb must agree with that subject in person and number we have there are four columns first column talks about singular noun we have the singular verb we have the plural noun the plural verb so we have rita listens singular subject plus verb with s that's our main rule we plural listen that's the verb that agrees with the subject we listen plural subject verb without s next number two you always tie with a plural verb form we have you are sweet regardless of you could be considered one or two it always agrees with plural verb form you are sweet you have been very kind you were there for me and so on and so forth for number three singular pronouns tied with singular verbs we have these pronouns which are considered singular each everybody anyone and so on we have the rule for that each of them the verb is is responsible is agrees with itch and everyone is concerned about high taxes no one no one singular is exempted from the tests if you have questions just comment then next let's have number four words join to a subject by with together with in addition to and including do not affect the verb meaning we will focus on our main subject which can be found at the beginning usually of the sentence the machine with all its parts sells for 500 pesos we will disregard with all its parts because our main subject the machine the same thing with the second example his property including two cars and a lot is for sale why is because his property is our subject it was just only joined by the subject next number five a collective noun ties either with a singular or plural verb that depends on whether the group is thought of as a whole or as individuals if they are considered as a whole then we have to use singular verb our class sings very well you don't have any additional detail here so it's considered singular as a group as a whole if it is individualized our class do not agree on the songs for the program so they are treated individually [Music] next number six nouns plural in form but singular a meaning tie with a singular verb we have a lot of this dramatics that's singular missiles singular physics mathematics and many more hope it is clear number seven when the word number is used in the sense of many it is plural when it refers to an arithmetical number it is singular a number of students are waiting outside it is considered to be many a number of students we have the number of students on the waiting list is small it's an arithmetical number therefore we have to use the singular verb and take note the number next number eight fractions and words such as all non-sum will be singular if buck or a total number or amount is implied and plural if individuals are considered again take note if individuals are considered that's going to be plural in form or mean pluto verb several police officers were there but none was wearing a uniform none here would be considered our subject therefore it agrees or it should agree with the verb was number nine if two subjects are joined by or either or neither nor the verb agrees with the subject nearer to it or near it neither the president nor the other officers have come the same thing with our examples in the first activity the president that's our first subject but the nearest subject is other officers that's plural have [Music] number 10 if one subject is used affirmatively and the other negatively the verb agrees with the subject that is used affirmatively she not i is responsible she that is considered to be an affirmative side not i therefore it's not am or have but it is is she is responsible you are at fault not he is at fault okay number eleven the verb ties with a relative pronoun used as a subject the relative pronoun ties with the number of the person of its antecedent he is one of the 10 students who are suspended what's the relative pronoun who who refers to 10 students who are suspended she is one of the most attractive girls who refer to the girls are active next number 12 this is the last one for our basic grammar rules a compound subject joined by and ties with a plural verb except when the subject referrer or subjects refer to the same person or thing my english instructor and advisor is absent here the english instructor and the advisor or and advisor is of the same person but here my my english instructor and my advisor are absent two persons are referred to if you have any questions or if you want to check more of these rules you can use the link for further information here it is if you have questions just comment now let's proceed to our activity let's apply find incorrect errors in agreement in the following sentences by rewriting the statements make sure that both the verb and the pronoun are correct we have their five sentences you're gonna rewrite this sentences to make them correct again make sure that both the verb and the pronoun are correct the second part of let's apply activity it's just like very basic um exercise underline the right form of the verb from those in parenthesis you have five items as well and other activities may be provided via google classroom if you have questions feel free to ask that ends our lesson on correct grammar in making definitions again we'll be able to make right definitions or correct definitions if we have good grammar because grammar matters in both written and oral in order for us to make definitions or to create meaning to our sentences thank you so much everyone stay safe god bless and bye bye
