in South Korea More than 70% of high school students go on to University many are feeling the pressure to get a prestigious job like a doctor or lawyer but now some young Koreans say they want a different life NHK worlds Kim chanju tells us more Renovations are in full swing at this apartment just outside so six young Carpenters are working on site including CH he joined the team after dropping out of Soul National University one of the country's top schools everyone including my parents wanted me to go to med school but it never appealed to me I wanted a job I would like something I could be proud of now he says he's much happier as a Carpenter and he's not the only one who feels that way his company says when there were recruiting last year most applicants were young and highly [Music] educated college entrance exams are still extremely important in South Korea going to a top university and getting a so-called good job is often seen as the only Road to success and yet those taking the civil servant exams would normally fluct to these food stores for a cheap fight but with fewer people taking the test the street has seen better days today fewer people are applying despite Civil Service being considered a top job others are even quitting mid career Pak starts work before the break of dawn he started his cleaning business last year he used to work at a PR firm but says he wanted a life with more freedom I couldn't do what I wanted before I just did what I was told though it's exhausting P says the work is paying off his current income is double his former salary but he says he's bothered by how some people look down on the job recently a lady said she felt sorry for us because we're young and doing this kind of job regardless of what others may think Pac says the work has also given given him a new perspective it's the first time I feel like people need me I think it's good to make money doing something rewarding one expert says it's a sign the times are changing as artificial intelligence evolves white color work will be the first thing to go in the end physical labor will become more valuable even if it hasn't been in the spotlight it looks like young people are bucking the trend of picking a career based on how it looks to others no one knows what the future holds but these two young workers say there is one thing they want to see a society where choosing to work a blue color job isn't newsworthy Kim chanju and HK world
