Lab Safety and Equipment

Introduction

  • Accidents are unforeseen but inevitable in a lab setting.
  • Knowledge of lab safety minimizes the likelihood of accidents.
  • Safety equipment in the lab can save lives during emergencies.

Identification of Safety Equipment

  • First Lab Visit: Identify the location of all safety equipment.

Essential Safety Equipment

Safety Shower

  • Purpose: Used for chemical or flame exposure.
  • Action:
    • Yell for help.
    • Move immediately to the safety shower.
    • Remove saturated clothing.
    • Drench affected skin thoroughly.
    • For flames, drench entire body and call 911.

Eye Wash Station

  • Purpose: Rinse eyes exposed to hazardous chemicals.
  • Procedure:
    • Hold eyes open.
    • Drench eyes thoroughly for at least 10 minutes.

Fire Extinguisher

  • Types of Fires:
    • Class A: Ordinary combustibles (wood, cloth, paper).
    • Class B: Organic solvents, flammable liquids.
    • Class C: Electrical equipment.
    • Class D: Combustible metals (less common in labs).
  • Extinguishing Methods:
    • Class A: Water or general-purpose extinguishers.
    • Class B & C: Chemical foam extinguishers (do not use water).
    • Most labs have dry chemical extinguishers effective against Class A, B, and C.
  • Important: Only trained personnel should use extinguishers. Evacuate and call 911 if the fire is too large.

Fire Blanket

  • Use: Extinguish small flames on workbenches, floors, or clothing.
  • Procedure:
    • Do not wrap a standing person.
    • Help them to the floor, wrap in the blanket, and roll until the fire is out.

First Aid Kit

  • Contains bandages and antiseptics for minor injuries.

Evacuation Routes

  • Should be posted near exits.
  • Know multiple routes in case one is blocked.

Chemical Fume Hood

  • Purpose: Protects from toxic vapors.
  • Usage:
    • Turn on exhaust fan.
    • Ensure proper venting.
    • Sash should be open 8 to 16 inches during use.
    • Never store chemicals inside.
    • Clean and remove materials after use.

Maintenance

  • Regularly test all safety equipment to ensure readiness.

Upcoming Lessons

  • The next lesson will focus on behaviors that enhance lab safety for you and coworkers.
