Overview of the Ten Commandments

  2. No graven images
  3. Do not take the Lord's name in vain
  4. Observe the Sabbath
  5. Honor your father and mother
  6. Do not murder
  7. Do not commit adultery
  8. Do not steal
  9. Do not bear false witness
  10. Do not covet

Focus on Commandment 5: Honor Your Parents

  • Biblical Reference: Exodus 20:12
  • Meaning of 'Honor': To give weight, respect, and proper treatment to parents.

How Adults Can Honor Parents

  1. Words: Speak respectfully, avoid gossip and belittlement.
  2. Care: Provide care when parents need it, as exemplified in 1 Timothy 5:8.
  3. Sibling Relationships: Treating siblings well honors parents.
  4. Listen: Give attention to parents' stories and interests.

Honoring Dysfunctional or Abusive Parents

  • Honoring does not mean allowing harmful relationships.
  • Set appropriate boundaries and have honest conversations.

How Children in the Home Can Honor Parents

  • Obey parents as illustrated in Ephesians 6 and Colossians 3.

Role of Parents in Teaching Honor and Obedience

  • Importance: Obedience to parents shapes a child's heart for future submission to God.
  • Teaching Obedience:
    • Few Principles Not Many Rules: Apply biblical principles universally.
    • Explain the 'Why': Connect rules to Jesus and the gospel.
    • Reward Obedience: Encourage correct actions with rewards.
    • Discipline Disobedience: Modeled after God's discipline, should be motivated by love, clear, and for sin.

Importance of Obedience

  • Forming Heart: Prepares children for obedience to God.
  • Promised Rewards: Linked to living well in the promised land.
