IELTS Writing Task 2 Lecture Notes by Chris from IELTS Advantage

Overview

  • Three Stages: Planning, Writing, Checking
  • Common mistake: Students start writing immediately without planning, leading to time management issues.

Planning Stage

Four Sub-Stages

  1. Question Types and Analysis

    • Understand different types of essays:
      • Opinion (Agree/Disagree)
      • Discussion
      • Advantages/Disadvantages
      • Problem and Solution
      • Causes and Solution
      • Double or Direct Questions
    • Analyze the question by identifying:
      • Type of question
      • General topic (e.g., government spending)
      • Specific topic (e.g., railways vs. roads)
  2. Idea Generation

    • Avoid brainstorming; focus on simple, relevant ideas.
    • Ask direct questions about the topic.
    • Think about common responses from a group of people.
  3. Structure Planning

    • Use a reliable structure for organizing ideas.
    • Memorize structures for different question types.
    • Create a roadmap for your essay.

Writing Stage

Three Components

  2. Main Body Paragraphs

    • Focus on one main idea per paragraph:

      • Explanation
      • Example
  3. Conclusion

    • Do not introduce new ideas or general statements.
    • Clearly restate your position.
    • Summarize main ideas.

Checking Stage

Three Checks

  1. Grammar Check

    • Identify and work on areas of weakness.
    • Read after every sentence, paragraph, and entire essay.
  2. Vocabulary Check

    • Ensure meanings are correct (100% rule).
    • Check collocations, appropriateness, variance, and level of vocabulary.
  3. Other Considerations

    • Paragraphing clarity
    • Word count (over 250 words)
    • Coherence and cohesion
