This lecture discusses the art of the Ajanta Caves, their history, major paintings and sculptures, and their features.

Introduction to Ajanta Caves

  • The Ajanta Caves are located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, 60 km from Jalgaon railway station.
  • These caves are built on a U-shaped cliff near the Waghora river.
  • There are a total of 30 caves here.
  • The site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The caves contain paintings and sculptures related to Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and Jataka tales.
  • Construction period: From 2nd century BCE to 6th century CE.

Types of Caves

  • Two types: Chaityagriha (prayer halls; caves 9, 10, 19, 26, 29) and Vihara (monasteries; other caves).

Construction Phases

  • Hinayana Phase (2nd BC-2nd AD): caves 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15A; 9 and 10 are chaityagrihas, others are viharas.
  • Mahayana Phase (Post 2nd AD-6th AD): veranda, hall, cells, Buddha shrine features; large images.
  • Vakataka Period (5th-early 6th AD): main caves 1-8, 11, 14-29.
  • Satavahana Period (2nd BC-2nd AD): caves 9, 10, 12, 13, 15.

Features of Ajanta Paintings and Sculptures

  • Paintings and sculptures made between 2nd BC-6th AD.
  • Use of limited, natural colors and clear outlines.
  • Early caves have simple style; later caves are more developed and grand.
  • Famous paintings: Padmapani and Vajrapani (cave 1), other Jataka tales.
  • Discovered in 1819 by a British officer.

Major Paintings and Sculptures

  • Padmapani Bodhisattva (Cave 1): watercolor mural; Bodhisattva holding a lotus in the right hand, calm and compassionate expression. Details include crown, necklace, and ornaments.
  • Mara's Victory (Cave 26): rock-cut stone relief; Buddha in padmasana and earth-touching mudra, surrounded by Mara's army; Buddha's victorious peace.
