Procreate Mountain Tutorial

Nov 11, 2025

Overview

Beginner tutorial for Procreate on iPad covering brushes, color, gestures, layers, and exporting by creating a simple mountain scene.

Getting Started and Interface

  • Gallery is home for artworks; tap plus to create new canvas, Screen Size is at the top.
  • Top-right tools: Paint, Smudge, Erase, Layers, Color; tap tool to select, tap again for options.
  • Brush Library: brush sets on left, brushes on right; over 100 brushes inspired by real media.

Brushes and Controls

  • Example brushes: 6B Pencil (pressure/tilt shading), Artistic > Old Beach (dynamic, textured marks).
  • Apple Pencil enhances pressure, tilt, speed response; finger drawing supported.
  • Left sliders: top controls brush size; bottom controls opacity from transparent to opaque.

Smudge and Erase

  • Smudge blends existing strokes by pushing paint around.
  • Erase removes color; both use the same Brush Library for expressive smudging/erasing.

Color Selection

  • Tap active color to open panel; use Color Disc for Hue (outer ring) and value/saturation (inner disc).
  • Select and apply colors like bright red; some brushes blend with existing color for painterly effects.

Gestures and Navigation

  • Two-finger tap: Undo; three-finger tap: Redo; hold to rapidly undo/redo.
  • Sidebar buttons also undo/redo; pinch to zoom, move, rotate canvas.
  • Quick pinch fits artwork to screen; three-finger scrub clears canvas.

Guided Artwork: Sunset Mountains

  • Select Drawing > Fine brush, low size; choose burned orange, draw and fill a round sun.
  • Choose warm dusty pink; draw and fill a mountain with pressure for line and fill.
  • Choose dark, less saturated navy; draw a left-side mountain.
  • Use eyedropper by touch-and-hold to pick colors quickly.

Layers: Concept and Workflow

  • Layers are stacked transparent sheets; paint/edit each independently.
  • Start with sun on Layer 1; add new layer for blue mountain, paint it.
  • Add another layer for pink mountain; erasing pink no longer affects blue.
  • Only paint on the selected (highlighted) layer; plus adds a layer above selection.
  • Add deep green mountain on a new layer; reorder by dragging below pink to place behind.
  • Erase part of pink mountain to make space; add new layer above green for a golden mountain.
  • Background Color sits at bottom; toggle visibility or change to off-white.

More Mountains and Eyedropper Use

  • Add top layer; eyedropper to reselect pink, adjust to lighter pink, draw another mountain.
  • Eyedropper burned orange for another mountain; adjust navy to pale blue for a left mountain.
  • Final mountains can share one layer; earlier separate layers allow easy fine-tuning.

Outlines and Layer Management

  • Add top layer; Calligraphy > Chalk brush; eyedropper off-white to outline mountains.
  • Outlines on their own layer can be erased/edited without affecting others.
  • Toggle layer visibility with checkbox; swipe left to delete, undo deletion with two-finger tap.

Texture and Ordering

  • Add layer; Artistic > Old Beach; eyedropper golden yellow; increase size/pressure to texture sun.
  • Add another layer; select slightly darker off-white; add textured sky.
  • Move cloud texture layer to bottom to sit behind mountains.

Exporting

  • Tap wrench (Actions) > Share; choose file type (PNG) and save to Photos.

  • Practice using layers for each major shape; reorder and erase non-destructively.
  • Use eyedropper and Color Disc to build harmonious palettes.
  • Experiment with texture overlays using Old Beach on separate layers.

Decisions

  • Adopt layers for each mountain and outlines to preserve editability.
  • Use off-white background and cloud texture placed at the bottom for depth.
