Driving Skills Test Study Guide
General Information
After passing the Knowledge Test, you are eligible for the Driving Skills Test.
Videos of test maneuvers are available for review.
A warm-up drive can be scheduled by calling or registering online.
Key Components of the Driving Skills Test
Starting the Vehicle
Check all controls and make sure they are functioning.
Leaving the Curb
Signal and wait until safe to re-enter traffic.
Controlling the Vehicle
Use gas pedal, brakes, and steering wheel correctly.
Adjust speed for traffic, pedestrians, road and weather conditions.
Driving in Traffic
Use proper lanes and signals.
Change lanes carefully and check blind spots by turning your head.
Maintain a safe following distance.
Obeying Traffic Signals and Signs
Turn into proper lanes without wide turns.
Scan for signs, signals, pedestrians, and vehicles.
Correctly yield and take right-of-way.
Stopping
Stop smoothly and at correct spots.
Ability to perform emergency stops.
Backing Up
Look over right shoulder.
Back in a straight line with full control.
Judging Distance
Maintain safe distance from other cars and pedestrians.
Respecting Rights of Others
Be courteous to other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Pay full attention to driving tasks.
Performing Specific Maneuvers
Arm signals for turns and stops.
Brake reaction test and emergency stop.
Parking on a hill and parallel parking.
Simulating backing out into traffic.
Helpful Hints: The Four "B's"
BREATHE
: Stay calm and relaxed.
BRAKES
: Ensure full stops.
BLINKER
: Use turn signal when changing lanes or moving from the side.
BLINDSPOT
: Always check blind spots.
Parking & Starting on a Hill
Instructions on how to park on a hill (uphill/downhill, curb/no curb).
Perform a "Neutral Check" to verify hill presence.
Parallel Parking
Park between two vehicles or designated poles.
Instructions include stopping, turning, straightening, and aligning.
Limit use of backup camera/mirrors.
Backing Around a Corner
Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks.
Back around the corner, keeping close to the curb.
Maintain a straight line when instructed.
Starting Maneuver
Check blind spots thoroughly.
Stop for approaching vehicles within 100'.

Follow instructions carefully during the test.
Practice maneuvers and anticipate test scenarios for better preparation.
