Lecture Notes: Art Creation and Exhibition Process

Studio Setup

  • Two Rooms:
    • Clean Room: Used for creating animations, editing iPad content, and other clean work.
    • Dirty Room: Used for painting and more hands-on art activities.

Painting Process

  • Duration:
    • Varies greatly; can take between a week to a year.
    • Paintings are developed on the floor, repeatedly reworked.
    • Artwork sometimes shown publicly before considered complete by the artist.
    • Pieces may return from exhibitions for further work.

Exhibition Planning

  • Model of Amy Silman’s First Museum Survey Show:
    • Utilized a miniature model of the IC Gallery to visualize the exhibition layout.

Portrait Series

  • Origin:
    • Created for a group show during the rise of Williamsburg Brooklyn as an art scene.
    • Featured portraits of community members, capturing the essence of the local art community.
  • Process:
    • Visited each person’s house to draw them.
    • Aim to capture the subject’s character, providing a portrait of the broader community.

Artistic Process

  • Silman's Art Philosophy:
    • Predominantly a painter.
    • Describes the painting process as slow and transformative.
    • Involves a series of decisions, changes, and reversals.
    • Uses snapshots to document change and development.
    • Focuses on both creation and destruction in the art process.
