Introduction

  • Year of Grief: Took place in the 10th year of Hijrah.
  • Known as 'Aamul Hur' in Arabic, meaning the Year of Sadness.
  • Named by later reflections in the Seerah due to two significant events.
  • Key Events: Death of Abu Talib and Khadija.

Death of Abu Talib

  • Abu Talib's Role:
    • Took care of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for over 30 years.
    • Supported the Prophet ﷺ despite not accepting Islam.
    • Protected the Prophet ﷺ from harm by the Quraysh.
  • On his deathbed:
    • Prophet ﷺ urged him to say la ilaha illallah.
    • Died affiliating with the religion of Abdul Muttalib (idol worship).
  • Benefit of Support:
    • Prophet ﷺ said Abu Talib would be in the lightest part of hellfire due to his support.

Death of Khadija

  • Khadija's Impact:
    • Prophet ﷺ's emotional support and first believer.
    • Wealth was used for Da'wah (spreading Islam).
    • Gave the Prophet ﷺ emotional support during the beginning of the revelation.
  • Prophet's Reflection:
    • Khadija believed when others disbelieved and supported him financially and emotionally.
  • Interaction with Jibreel:
    • Jibreel sent Salam to Khadija and gave her glad tidings of a home in Jannah.

Prophet’s Struggles Post Deaths

  • Alone in Mecca without emotional or physical support.
  • No means of protection after Abu Talib’s death.

Al-Ta'if Expedition

  • Prophet ﷺ sought support in Al-Ta'if, a town near Mecca.
  • Strategy: Direct approach to the leaders (Banu Amr ibn Umair).
  • Result: Rejected harshly and expelled.
  • Hardest day in Da'wah according to the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Prophet ﷺ's Mercy:
    • Given the option to destroy Al-Ta'if but chose not to, hoping for future believers.

Return to Mecca

  • Dilemma: Returning to Mecca without support could lead to harm.
  • Protection by Al-Mut'im ibn Adi, a non-Muslim.
  • Al-Mut'im's Jiwar (protection) provided safety for the Prophet ﷺ.
